A few weeks ago, I interviewed Patrick Davis, the executive director of Common Sense Issues, a 501 (c)(4). (They support Mike Huckabee for President.)
When I interviewed Davis it was right before Iowa, so Mitt Romney was the primary target. Well, times change, and so do enemies. The McCain campaign just issued this press release criticizing Common Sense Issues for conducting "push-polls" against McCain in South Carolina:
COLUMBIA, SC -- Attorney General Henry McMaster, member of the South Carolina Truth Squad, issued the following statement today in response to push polling being conducted in South Carolina by Common Sense Issues, a 501 (c)(4) organization based in Colorado Springs, Colorado:
"Last evening the Associated Press reported that that an out-of-state special interest group, Common Sense Issues, had launched a massive push polling effort disparaging John McCain and other candidates for president. In their push poll, Common Sense Issues makes several misleading claims regarding John McCain's record.
"Allow me to set the record straight. In the U.S. Senate, John McCain has been an unwavering voice for the rights of the unborn. He has fought, without concern of political consequence, to eliminate wasteful spending in Washington. And John McCain understands that solving the problem of illegal immigration requires that we secure our borders first.
"I urge voters in South Carolina to join me in rejecting these negative and misleading attacks."
... Speaking of the "push poll" issue, during our blogger conference call today, McCain told me: "I just hope the people of South Carolina will not accept it."
In other McCain news, Senator John McCain received the endorsement of conservative super-star Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn today (you probably heard it here first). His campaign also launched the television ad "Tied Up" in South Carolina. According to the campaign, the ad will air in the Greenville/Spartanburg television market. You can see it here.
Lastly, during our blogger call this afternoon, Jim Geraghty asked McCain if Romney "stepped on his speech" last night. McCain said he wasn't aware of it if it happened. Regarding whether or not his campaign will have enough money to compete, he said they are raising hundreds of thousands of dollars every day on the internet. He also said that his campaign "... will win South Carolina first, but the money is going to be there -- I'm confident.
