Trump Explains Why He's Supporting Moore

President Trump explained his reasons for supporting Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore ahead of next week’s special election.

The president on Monday said when it comes down to it, the GOP simply needs a Republican to hold the seat.

“Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama. We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, V.A., Judges 2nd Amendment and more. No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!” he tweeted.

"Putting Pelosi/Schumer Liberal Puppet Jones into office in Alabama would hurt our great Republican Agenda of low on taxes, tough on crime, strong on military and borders...& so much more. Look at your 401-k’s since Election. Highest Stock Market EVER! Jobs are roaring back!"

The president did not comment on the sexual misconduct allegations against the judge in his morning tweet.

Even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has taken a softer stance on Moore, saying on ABC’s “The Week” that voters should “make the call.”

McConnell and Trump had supported Luther Strange, Moore’s opponent in the Republican primary.

After the allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior against Moore surfaced, McConnell called for him to step down, saying last month, “Roy Moore should step aside, the women who’ve come forward are entirely credible.”

“He’s obviously not fit to be in the United States Senate, and we’ve looked at all the options to try to prevent that from happening,” he added.

The White House also changed its tune on Moore, with White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders initially saying, “The president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”

Then when asked later about the election, she said it’s a decision voters must make.

“That is a decision the people of Alabama need to make, not the president,” she said.
