Dem Rep Claims One Republican Is Taking Articles of Impeachment Against Trump Seriously

Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen said Sunday that it’s not just members of his own party that are considering articles of impeachment against President Trump.

On “MSNBC Live with Alex Witt,” Cohen said he has “one Republican that has said he is looking at it, he’s considering it.”

Other Republicans, he argued, have questioned Trump’s ability to lead the nation.

“I have other Republicans, just like Sen. Bob Corker suggested, who have told me on a constant basis that they know this man is not balanced, he is not capable of continuing to lead us,” he said.

In private, these Republicans will “tell you, by their words and by their expressions, that they would like to see an end” to the commander in chief’s presidency.

Cohen acknowledged, however, that the problem is the GOP base, which is still very supportive of the president, meaning these Republican politicians who he claims object to the president cannot come out publicly against Trump.

The Tennessee lawmaker said he was still trying to get more sponsors to his upcoming resolution to impeach the president.

“We don’t want to be like the previous resolution that was introduced in July by one member by himself,” Cohen said, explaining why his effort is different from previous articles of impeachment that were introduced. “Not that William Tell and the Lone Ranger aren’t right sometimes, but it’s best in Congress to have some support.”

In August, Cohen announced his plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump over his response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Instead of unequivocally condemning hateful actions by neo-Nazis, white nationalists and Klansmen following a national tragedy, the President said 'there were very fine people on both sides.' There are no good Nazis. There are no good Klansmen,” Cohen said in a statement at the time.

“President Trump has failed the presidential test of moral leadership.”
