We haven’t heard much from the former presidential candidate since his exit three months ago from the Republican nomination process. Today, however, he’s going all in and backing his one-time GOP rival.
Texas Governor Rick Perry, one of Mitt Romney's former rivals for the GOP presidential nomination, has formally endorsed the former Massachusetts governor for president.Perry, after previously endorsing Newt Gingrich, now says Romney, whom he once called a “vulture capitalist,” has “earned the nomination.”
“Today I join the many conservative Republicans across the nation in endorsing Mitt Romney for president and pledge to him, my constituents and the Republican Party than I will continue to work hard to help defeat President Obama," Perry said in a statement issued Wednesday.
"American jobs, economic stability and national security depend on electing a new president. Mitt's vision and record of private-sector success will put America back on the path of job creation, economic opportunity and limited government."
As expected, Mitt Romney responded to the Texas governor's formal endorsement via Twitter:
According to the article, Rick Perry has not spoken nor stumped for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee since ending his campaign last January. Perhaps that’s not all that surprising given the rough and tumble of the campaign. However – in a gesture of solidarity – Rick Perry’s former campaign spokesman Ray Sullivan told Fox News the Texas governor is willing to change his mind. Perry is popular among southern evangelicals and social conservatives. Thus, lending his support on the campaign trail could give GOP voters in the Deep South a reason to turn out in November.
