Gov. Cuomo: America 'Was Never that Great'

Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has stepped in it a few times before with his colorful opinions. On Wednesday, he gave us a new unfortunate soundbite.

"We're not going to make America great again," Cuomo said at an event for women and girls. "It was never that great."

Listen to his tone. It doesn't sound like he was joking. The audience, as you can hear, didn't really know what to make of it, giving him a mix of weak applause and awkward laughter.

"We have not reached greatness," he continued. "We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged. We will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone."

Before the governor was downplaying America's greatness, he was targeting people in his own state. In 2014, he suggested that conservatives and pro-lifers had "no place" in the state of New York. This year, Cuomo controversially suggested he was an undocumented immigrant because he came from “poor Italian-Americans” who came to America “without papers.”

Cuomo is up for re-election in November and is facing a challenge from the progressive, former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon.
