Farmville, VA - The Clinton campaign yet again evoked the name of Ronald Reagan as a means of denouncing their opponent Donald Trump at Tuesday night's vice presidential debate at Longwood University. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), Hillary Clinton's running mate, mentioned Reagan at one point in their discussion to try and argue Trump is the candidate the 40th president warned us about, suggesting the GOP nominee is a nuclear-armed "maniac."
Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN) was disgusted by the comment and noted the remarks were even beneath him and Mrs. Clinton. The governor had some surrogates in the post-debate spin room who agreed.
Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS), who sits on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, had a simple response to Kaine's comment.
“I wish that Secretary Clinton had an ounce of the trustworthiness of Ronald Reagan,” he said, after chuckling.
Hillary Clinton has also tried to suggest that Reagan would be disheartened by this year's Republican choice. On the campaign trail in September, she wondered, "What would Reagan say?" about a man who praises Vladimir Putin?
Of course, Pence was not going to let the Clinton campaign be the only ones who used the name "Reagan" last night. At one point during the discussion, the Indiana governor managed to sneak in the famous line, "There you go again."
