It's a pretty straightforward question: Can your candidate be trusted? Yet, New Hampshire governor and current Senate candidate Maggie Hassan could not give CNN's Manu Raju a straight answer on Tuesday when he quizzed her about Hillary Clinton's honesty. In their conversation, Hassan strangely pretended to ignore his question and kept talking about Clinton's job experience.
“Do you think that she is honest and trustworthy?” asked CNN’s Manu Raju.
“I support Hillary Clinton for the presidency because her experience and her record demonstrate that she is qualified to hold the job,” said Hassan.“Do you think she is honest?” he asked again.
“She has, um, a critical, critical plan among others for making college more affordable,” Hassan responded.
Hassan may not be able to answer the question, but the American public sure can. Asked repeatedly whether they trust Clinton, overwhelmingly majorities keep saying no. As Raju pointed out, a CNN/ORC poll from July reveals 64 percent of registered voters don't believe she's honesty and trustworthy.
Hassan is trying to unseat New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte. Knowing how unpopular Clinton is, perhaps Hassan doesn't want to say anything that will jeopardize her chances in the independent-minded state.
Ayotte has also distanced herself from her party's nominee. Just this week she promised she'd stand up to Trump if she disagrees with his rhetoric or actions.
