Los Angeles Receives Official Approval to Host 2028 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has given Los Angeles its official approval to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, and will officially announce on Wednesday that the 2024 Summer Olympics have been awarded to Paris and the 2028 Summer Olympics have been awarded to Los Angeles.

Los Angeles originally applied to host the 2024 games, but after every other bid city other than Paris withdrew their submission, the IOC made the unusual step of saying that both the 2024 games and the 2028 games would go to those two cities. In July, it was revealed that Paris had been selected as the host of the 2024 Summer Olympics, meaning that Los Angeles had to slightly adjust its previous bid for 2024 to now reflect 2028. After this process was completed, the IOC approved the new contract.

Los Angeles had originally bid for 2024, but because of the new date, it had to make changes to its host contract.

The evaluation commission signed off on those Monday, saying that although details need to be finalized, it is confident LA can host in 2028.

Los Angeles received concessions for agreeing to host four years later, including receiving a portion of the IOC's surplus from the Olympics to fund youth sports programs in the city.

The IOC is giving Los Angeles extra funding to make up for the fact that they're hosting the games four years later than they originally anticipated. The 2028 games are the first Summer Olympics to be held in the United States since the 1996 Summer Olympics were played in Atlanta. Salt Lake City played host to the 2002 Winter Olympics.

As it turns out, the 2028 games may not end up being the next to be held in the United States, as there's talk of Denver submitting a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Those games will be awarded in 2019.
