This Attitude is Part of the Problem

Charlie Spiering reports remarks from First Lady Michelle Obama:

"See, I loved that Barack was so committed to serving others that he turned down high-paying jobs, and instead started his career fighting to get folks back to work in struggling communities. I respected that."

These comments are reminiscent of what she said back in 2008:

We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we’re asking young people to do. Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that.

Her attitude is part of the problem in America today.  We have a whole elite "helping class" that either can't or won't acknowledge the very important contributions made to this country by corporate America, and consider themselves to have a monopoly on civic virtue.

There's nothing wrong with having a "high-paying job." There's nothing wrong with being part of "corporate America."  In fact, the people in corporate America -- most of the time with the high-paying jobs -- are the ones who not only subsidize the people who work for the "community" with their tax dollars and charitable donations . . . they also HIRE other people so that they can be independent and not need a government salary or subsidy.

So when are the Obamas going to start appreciating the job creators in corporate America, rather than denigrating them and their importance?

To paraphrase an old joke: Obviously, Michelle and Barack Obama loooove people without high-paying jobs (or any jobs at all).  That's why they've made so many of them over the last three-and-a-half years.
