As I've written before, here's why. For a good chunk of the Democrat leadership, it's not about health care, it's about politics and the willingness to take a temporary hit in exchange for what they perceive to be a long-term, systemic advantage.
As McArdle's piece reflects, it otherwise makes no sense whatsoever for the Democrats to follow this stinker over the cliff -- especially when the history of Hillarycare in 1994 makes it clear that voters weren't punishing Democrats for not passing a bill; they were angry that the politicians tried to pass a bill they didn't like.
