Evidence? Dem Congressman Says Trump Might Have Committed The 'Greatest Political Crime In History'

The Comey memo and the announcement of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to be special counsel for the DOJ’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians has spawned another phase of liberals frothing at the mouth over Trump. On CNN, host John Berman was interviewing Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) about the president’s tweet criticizing the investigation as a witch-hunt. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, Berman wanted to know how Mr. Lieu felt being part of that “witch-hunt.”

“My response is it may be that this is the greatest political witch-hunt in history, or it may be the greatest political crime in history. And that’s why I’m so pleased that a special counsel has been investigated to see in fact what has happened,” replied the congressman.

“Well, if his tweet was hyperbolic, then the statement you just made was equally hyperbolic—‘the greatest political crime in American history’ that’s a high bar, sir considering of course Watergate,” replied Berman.

Lieu defended his remarks, saying that if there was collusion with the Russians that resulted in Trump winning the 2016 election, then that would go “far beyond what happened with Watergate.”

Yes, a presidential campaign colluding with officials of a foreign government to win a presidential election would be explosive. It would be scandalous. And it would be a politically un-survivable situation should any administration be caught in the middle of it. But that’s not the case with Trump. There’s no evidence to suggest his campaign was colluding with the Russians to win, no matter how many times Democrats say it to make it so. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) was even forced to admit that there is no evidence of collusion in her Morning Joe appearance on MSNBC when pressed by The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein. Raging Waters’ contention is even more extreme. Again, without offering a scintilla of evidence, she feels that the slogans of “lock her up” and “crooked Hillary” when referring to the former first lady and two-time presidential loser were concocted by the Kremlin, and that the strategies deployed by Trump came from Putin’s playbook. That’s unhinged. Total unadulterated conspiracy tin foil that Waters and other Democrats desperately want Americans to wear as hats in their bid to hamstring the Trump White House, or better yet—remove him from office. Waters also said, concerning the firing of James Comey from the FBI, that it’s troubling that Trump did it—though admitted that if Clinton had won the election, she would have been fine with her firing Mr. Comey. It’s just a left wing ploy to nullify the results of the 2016 election.

Democrats are talking impeachment, or at least thought about it, concerning the Comey memo, where the former FBI director reportedly wrote ways in which he felt the president was acting improperly in trying to influence the FBI’s investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn. The memo has been verified to exist by Fox News and the House Oversight and Senate Intelligence Committees have asked for those documents. The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who is resigning at the end of June, requested all documents relating to communications between Trump and Mr. Comey from the FBI. Mr. Comey has also been asked to testify before Congress to shed more details on this matter. At the same time, the Flynn investigation is a separate inquiry from the Russian collusion probe.

Regardless, the greatest crime in political history charge absent of evidence is just hyperbolic nonsense, though for the Californian delegation, these remarks seems hardly alien. They’re the most vocal in the anti-Trump, pro-impeach crowd.
