President Trump is “certainly close” to being an unindicted co-conspirator in an investigation involving campaign finance violations, former FBI Director James Comey argued Sunday.
Speaking to MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace about the release of the Michael Cohen sentencing memo, Comey said the language in the filing suggests “the crimes were committed at his direction.”
A filing from federal prosecutors on Friday stated that Cohen “acted in coordination with and at the direction of Individual-1,” which is Trump.
In August, the president’s former personal attorney admitted to violating federal campaign finance laws when he coordinated hush-money to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal ahead of the 2016 election.
If Trump weren’t the president, he’d be in "serious jeopardy" of being charged in the Southern District of New York investigation, Comey later said.
"The government wouldn’t make that sponsoring allegation if they weren't seriously contemplating going forward with criminal charges," he contined. "Where it stands here I can’t say."

Comey's remarks came the same day Trump criticized him over his closed-door testimony before House lawmakers on Friday.
"On 245 occasions, former FBI Director James Comey told House investigators he didn’t know, didn’t recall, or couldn’t remember things when asked," Trump tweeted. "Opened investigations on 4 Americans (not 2) - didn’t know who signed off and didn’t know Christopher Steele. All lies!"
He continued: "Leakin’ James Comey must have set a record for who lied the most to Congress in one day. His Friday testimony was so untruthful! This whole deal is a Rigged Fraud headed up by dishonest people who would do anything so that I could not become President. They are now exposed!"
