While Democratic leadership is doing its best to silence talk of impeachment within the party, hoping to sell their reputation to the American people as the “no drama Democrats”—others seem keen to take concrete action.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez, for example, promised new articles of impeachment against the president would be filed in the next couple of weeks, before Thanksgiving.
“It is clear to us that he is unfit to be president of the United States of America,” Gutiérrez said Wednesday.
On what grounds the articles will cite is unknown, however. Gutierrez only offered they will “not leave you lacking for reason,” assuring that guidance is being sought from constitutional scholars to make an airtight case.
Also unknown? Who else is working with Gutierrez on this effort.
Other Democrats who have spoken publicly about impeaching the president in the past could be supporting Gutierrez, including Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), and Al Green (D-Texas).
Cohen said in August he intended to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump over his response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, while Sherman and Green already have.
“I’m in no rush to be first, but I will say this: We have to — we have to bring it to the floor,” Green said, hoping for a future vote on the articles, reports The Hill.
Gutierrez was pleased with his colleagues’ individual efforts but hopes to form a coalition around the cause.
“I appreciate what single members have done,” Gutiérrez said, reports The Hill. “I think it’s time to do a group.”
