White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer announced Monday new seats in the traditional briefing room will be digitally opened up to journalists working outside of Washington D.C.

Four "seats" will be offered through Skype, allowing journalists living 50 miles or more outside of the nation's Capitol to directly engage in the briefing. The seats will be available as day passes starting at the end of the week.

"We’re excited to open up into the field and fold here a diverse group of journalists from around the country who may not have the convenience or funding to travel to Washington. I think this can benefit us all by giving a platform to voices that are not necessarily based here in the beltway,” Spicer said.

The move is unprecedented and allows for local and foreign journalists, in addition to new media, to directly cover the new administration.
