Tea Leaves: Mitt Romney Courting...John McCain's Vote?

Perhaps the best way to convince grassroots Righties that you don’t deserve the nomination is to lobby openly for John McCain’s support ahead of a potential 2016 presidential run. That, after all, is apparently how Mitt Romney spent his Tuesday this week. Nevertheless, if you’re an establishment candidate and your biggest rival is Jeb Bush, it’s not the worst idea in the world. Always smart to cover your bases.

National Journal reports:

Mitt Romney placed a phone call to 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain Tuesday, a sign he is attempting to recapture his support before launching another bid.

"He told me he is seriously considering it, and we discussed issues and friendships and things like that," McCain told a scrum of reporters on Capitol Hill. "We had a long conversation. We are very good friends."

Like pretty much everyone else, I thought Romney threepeating was exceedingly unlikely until very recently. Now – and it’s hard to believe it’s actually come to this – it seems he’s going to run. Perhaps theories that he’s going to officially say ‘no’ when the time is right aren’t implausible – but calling up McCain doesn’t strike me as a deliberate head-fake, either.

McCain himself admitted that the former nominee is “seriously considering” reentering public life. But only, perhaps, if the Maverick's behind him.
