Neighbor Pens Letter to Mom: Move or Euthanize Your Autistic Child

“Do the right thing and move or euthanize him,” an angry and anonymous neighbor wrote to a mother of an autistic child, presumably because the child annoyed her. “Either way, we are ALL better off!!!”

How sad (via LifeNews):

Could this so-called “neighbor” be any more selfish and callous? I don’t presume to know what it’s like to raise an autistic child, of course, but it’s self-evident that this is no easy task. It takes a lot out of parents and caregivers to raise children with disabilities -- which, by the way, I have seen firsthand. Put simply, the letter above is disgraceful. This woman should be ashamed of herself. Where’s the compassion in her life?

Perhaps it’s worth contrasting this hate-filled screed with a humble request a Catholic priest based out of Gainesville, Virginia posted on his Facebook page last month. Basically, he asked if any parishioners (or anyone, really) would be willing to adopt a child with Down syndrome a young couple in the community was contemplating aborting. The response was incredibly moving. The calls poured in -- hundreds, in fact -- from around the globe asking if their family could be the family lucky enough to adopt the unwanted child. Amazing. If anything, it was a much-needed reminder that selfless people do still exist in the world, the letter above notwithstanding.
