Early on Tuesday, President Donald Trump sent out a tweet that many say had sexual implications about Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). Trump called Gillibrand a "flunky" who would do "anything" for campaign contributions.
Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office “begging” for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 12, 2017
Then in came Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who, while trying to stand up for her colleague...kind of backfired. Warren chastized Trump for attempting to "bully, intimidate and slut-shame" Gillibrand. For good measure, she tossed in the #ShePersisted hashtag.
Are you really trying to bully, intimidate and slut-shame @SenGillibrand? Do you know who you're picking a fight with? Good luck with that, @realDonaldTrump. Nevertheless, #shepersisted. https://t.co/mYJtBZfxiu— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) December 12, 2017
So, it's not entirely clear that Warren knows what "slut-shaming" means.
Why is Elizabeth calling her colleague a slut? https://t.co/t3uwWY4J4J— Bethany S. Mandel (@bethanyshondark) December 12, 2017
Is there a better way to cap 2017 than Liz Warren unintentionally calling Kirsten Gillibrand a slut? https://t.co/Zo9aZBFJlQ— Amber Athey (@amber_athey) December 12, 2017
Uuuhhh, as I understood it the word slut-shame means "to stigmatize (a woman) for engaging in behavior judged to be promiscuous or sexually provocative." Is that really what Warren means? https://t.co/49O718Mxys— Gabriel Malor (@gabrielmalor) December 12, 2017
Dec. 12, 2017: The day Donald Trump and Liz Warren both implied that Kirsten Gillibrand is a slut.— jon gabriel (@exjon) December 12, 2017
For the record: to "slut-shame" someone is to mock them for their promiscuous behavior, under the belief that women have the inherent right to have as much or as little sex as they want without any sort of societal judgment for their actions. By the tweet, Warren was--either accidentally or not--basically calling Gillibrand a slut and saying that she'd sleep around for campaign contributions. Not the best look, regardless of what she meant to say with the tweet.
