BREAKING: Rep. Scalise "Critical" Following Surgery

Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), who was shot in the hip early Wednesday morning while at a baseball practice for Thursday evening's Congressional Baseball Game, is in critical condition following surgery, the hospital announced. Scalise was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, which has a Level I trauma center.

Matt Mika, a former congressional staffer-turned-lobbyist who was also shot in the attack, is also in critical condition. Mika was reportedly the worst injured in the attack and was shot in the chest. He is being treated at GWU Hospital.

The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, who opened fire after discovering that the players were Republican congressmen. Hodgkinson was killed when Capitol Police returned fire. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) condemned Hodgkinson, and all violence in general, after it was revealed that he had previously volunteered for his presidential campaign.
