Good Enough for Government Work?

There are many diligent and responsible government workers. Some of my friends used to (or do) work for the government, as did I.

But numbers don't lie. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, government workers miss 50% MORE of their work hours (due to absences for personal reasons or illness) than do their private sector counterparts. This is, of course, in addition to the fact that federal government workers make twice as much as their counterparts in the private sector.

Now, this isn't because government workers get sick 50% as often, or need personal time 50% as frequently as those in private enterprise. Nor do those in federal government work make twice the salary because they are twice as skilled or qualified.

Rather, the difference lies in the nature of government vs. the private sector. In government, there's never any bottom line to meet. It's nearly impossible to get fired. In government, no one ultimately is accountable (up to and including the President, it seems).

It makes one wonder why so many Democrats are so eager to expand government's authority and control over the lives of average Americans.
