“I don’t know? Does Cuba have a government-run health-care system?” Imagine a secret tweet by Sarah Palin disclosing such ignorance.
But this was no secret tweet--nor an off-the- cuff comment. It was two-time Democratic Presidential candidate and current Federal indictee John Edwards speaking on the record at Iowa Caucus in August 2007. The comment was recorded by ABC News, where it languished all but ignored, withered, and finally perished. No “going viral” for this amazing boner by a (fully-declared) two-time U.S. Presidential candidate.
“I’m going to be honest with you,” runs the entire blooper as blogged by National Review’s Jim Geraghty. “I don’t know a lot about Cuba’s healthcare system. Is it a government-run system?”
John Edwards served for over half a decade in the U.S. Senate, sitting on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and co-sponsoring a resolution for the U.S. go to war against a nation 6200 miles away. “Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a menace,” he explained his sponsorship. “He has weapons of mass destruction and is doing everything in his power to get nuclear weapons...he has supported terrorists.”
The Castro regime sits 90 miles from the nation John Edwards hoped to lead as President. It brought the world closest to nuclear war of any on earth, craved to nuke John Edward’s homeland, helped train and harbor virtually every terrorist group on earth. Castro’s Stalinist regime is also implicated in America’s most dogged tragedy/mystery (JFK’s assassination), gave America one of its most serious immigration crises (Mariel Boatlift) and provided one of America’s most watched “human-interest” stories (Elian Gonzalez.) The so-called U.S. embargo of Cuba is debated and discussed by the U.S. media and legislature incessantly, especially by Edwards’ former Presidential running-mate John Kerry, a tireless proponent of succor for Castro.
While Senator John Edwards served on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence a Cuban agent was convicted of the same crimes as Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and dodged their fate only with a plea-bargain. This spy managed the deepest penetration of the U.S. Department of Defense in U.S. history in what is described as the “most damaging espionage case since the end of the Cold War.” Her name is Ana Montes and she worked for Fidel Castro.
Somewhere amongst all of the coverage, activities and responsibilities above, a man running for President of the United States should have inferred that Cuba is Communist, or so you’d like to think. So let’s review his comment: “I don’t know a lot about Cuba’s healthcare system. Is it a government-run system?”
John Edwards was born in 1953. He probably went through those school drills during the Cuban Missile Crisis where we all scurried under our desks. But shortly after admitting his ignorance regarding Communist Cuba’s healthcare, Edwards hailed Michael Moore’s infomercial for Fidel Castro titled “Sicko,” as “a great movie!” (as captured here on YouTube.)
Fidel Castro himself shares Edwards’ admiration for the rotund filmmaker, hailing Michael Moore as “that outstanding American!” and regaling his subjects with Moore’s films in (crumbling) theatres throughout his fiefdom.
So just think of the sparkling material--of the sure-fire snarkiness!--writers for John Stewart, Colbert, Maher, Letterman, SNL, etc. etc. etc. passed up for one teenzy little snag: John Edwards is a Democrat!
