DNC Supports Special Precincts in Nevada

The Democratic National Committee has formally stepped into a burgeoning battle between the Nevada teacher unions and the Nevada Democratic Party.

On Wednesday, the DNC filed a motion to support the Democratic Party of Nevada’s decision to create the “at large” precincts.

The state party is under fire from the Nevada State Education. On January 11, the NSE filed a lawsuit against the Democratic Party of Nevada because, according to the teachers, the party favors other unions, like the influential Culinary Workers Union, by creating nine “at large” precincts located in resorts and casinos located on the Las Vegas strip.

Many members of the 60,000 strong Culinary Workers Union, Local 226, work on the Las Vegas strip and would benefit from the location of the worker-based precinct areas.

The NSE suit alleged that the state party has "violated the principle of 'one person, one vote' by creating 'at-large' precincts for certain caucus participants, based solely on the employment of such participants.”

Further causing rifts is the fact that the Culinary Workers Union has endorsed Barack Obama last week.

Nevada’s caucus is scheduled for January 19.
