Amherst, MA Flies a UN Flag in Town Center

Editor's note: This story has been updated to include the fact that Amherst also proudly flies the American flag. By noting that the town flies a UN flag, I did not mean to somehow suggest that it did not also fly the American flag. Townhall regrets any confusion this may have caused readers.

Hampshire College set off a firestorm of outrage recently—first for its decision to lower the flag to half-mast after Donald Trump’s victory, and then to remove it completely after a flag burning incident. The move was to “facilitate much-needed dialogue … about how to dismantle the bigotry that is prevalent in our society,” the school's president said.

But it seems the progressive apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. In Amherst, Massachusetts, the town where the college is located, the United Nations flag has flown in the town center for the last four decades.

“We’re the only town in the country, by town fiat, that voted to have the U.N. flag put up,” Barbara McGarrah, the last member of the Amherst chapter of the United Nations Association, told the Amherst Bulletin in March.

“I hope we continue it forever and ever,” she added.

Fox News’ Jesse Watters recently visited Amherst to ask locals what they thought about the school’s decision to remove the flag. He also confronted the college’s president about his decision.

In the segment, locals tell Watters about the UN flag and footage shows it still flying.

The town also proudly flies the American flag on its tallest flagpole.

Hampshire College has since reversed its decision and raised the American flag once again.
