Light-bearer, the Shining One, the Morning Star. That’s what Lucifer means. He is the master of deception, seconded only by our own ability to deceive ourselves. Lies are an attempt to destroy what is real. It is the ultimate act of rebellion—an attempt to ascend to the throne of deity. Lucifer is also described as the Father of Lies and those who practice deceit are named as his children. (John 8:44)

Lying has become so common place in our public discourse that it’s viewed with comic disinterest. Many see lying as necessary or sophisticated and have come to expect it in our politicians. How many people really take seriously anything a candidate says on the campaign trail? It’s as if politics is practiced in a moral vacuum, that it is exempted from the normal expectations of the civil society. This is by design.

The primary weapon of the despot is the lie. The natural state of man is liberty; therefore, the despot must deceive, initially, as to his true intention. No rational man desires to live in servitude. The lie always precedes the sword. But, first the oppressor must enslave the mind by perverting reality through artifice. Once made docile by the deception of paternal care, divested of firearms, the tools of power, the citizenry may be converted into serfs by force or coercion. This progression is illustrated throughout the history of man—a chronicle of the powerful making slaves of the powerless.

What also makes the lying of our national representatives so insidious are its vast ramifications. It devalues every citizen as a moral and intellectual being. When a politician lies, he or she is making the assumption that you’re stupid and gullible. They destroy language itself by constructing a tangled web of euphemisms that mischaracterize the actions they intend to take or the effect that policies will have on constituents. These are the tools of hacks and intellectual pigmies. They do not seek honest debate in the marketplace of ideas but seek to subvert the democratic process, knowing the vapidity of their policies. This is not business as usual. This is evil.

A republic cannot function without a public discourse characterized by truth telling. Only knowledge of the truth can preserve us as a free people. Every lie uttered by a politician erodes the liberty of every American and seeks to impose an additional measure of control. Politics and morality are inextricably intertwined. Immoral people do not long possess liberty because liberty is a function of God’s blessing. Where His Spirit is, there is liberty. (2 Corinthians 3:17) Where He is absent, there is only ignorance, despotism, and slavery. Consider every humanist attempt at governance in modern history: Adolph Hitler’s Germany, Chairman Mao’s China, Stalin’s Russia and you find genocide on a scale that boggles the mind. Lucifer too is described as a “murderer from the beginning.” And, each one of these murderous despots were pathological liars.

Therefore, when Nancy Pelosi obfuscated and told the American people that “we have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it” she played the role of tyrant by denying the American people their right to debate and evaluate the issues based on the facts. This is not just a political ploy. This is evil. When Harry Reid lied about Mitt Romney’s tax status he attempted to perpetrate a fraud on the American people and deny them their right to choose a presidential candidate based on the facts. This is evil. When Hillary Clinton attempted to deflect attention away from her role in the Benghazi debacle by declaring, “what difference does it make?” she perpetrated a fraud on the American people by obfuscating the truth. This is evil. And, when Barack Obama stands before an entire nation and declares, “First, no matter what you’ve heard, if you like your doctor—or healthcare plan—you can keep it” he perpetrates an unforgivable act of tyranny by suppressing the truth. The foregoing is just a tinny sampling from a huge body of material. For example, just Google “Harry Reid” and “lie.” You may want to grab a sandwich because you’ll be at the keyboard for a while. This is not how good men and women comport themselves. They are their father’s children.

Our nation’s first president, George Washington, was viewed by his contemporaries as a giant among great men. His integrity was beyond question. In fact, stories regarding his impeccable character were circulated and readily accepted. The most famous story about President Washington describes him as a young boy, ax in hand, having chopped down a cherry tree. When confronted by his father, young Washington replied, “I cannot tell a lie.” This account is probably fiction. However, that doesn’t matter. What’s important is that Washington’s contemporaries found this account to be completely plausible. He was a great man.

Obama’s character matters. His lies matter. Most likely, if Obama were caught chopping down a cherry tree, he’d hand the ax to poor Malik. He just can’t help himself; he is his father’s child.
