Back to the Future: Obama's High Speed Rail Debacle

The president's costly high-speed rail vision to 'win the future' is neither green, efficient nor practical.

"Republican governors in Ohio, Wisconsin and Florida have all rejected DOT money to build lines, saying that the plans would leave taxpayers on the hook for millions.

"When he took office on November 3, 2010, Ohio Gov. John Kasich made it a top priority to cancel the project and give back the $385 million awarded from the Department of Transportation.

"'No one put credence into the price tag," a representative from Kasich's office tells Townhall. "The Department of Transportation estimate [after looking at the average cost of a ticket and number of riders] showed that Ohio taxpayers would be on the hook for $17 million each year.

"'At the end of the day, the train would only move at 39 mph. We obtained a train schedule from 1935, and that train moved at about the same speed as the one that they wanted to put in here. It would be a bad use of scarce resources in Ohio.'"
