Pentagon Will No Longer Seek Bonus Repayments From California Vets

In a quick reversal, the Pentagon has announced it will no longer seek bonus repayments from California Army National Guard soldiers.

Earlier this week, we found out that the Pentagon sent letters to the former soldiers asking they repay the bonuses they received for reenlistment - or face fines.

Lawmakers blasted the Pentagon's demand, calling it "disgraceful" and "insulting."

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said the repayment process will be suspended as soon as it is practical.

Update: Not everyone is pleased by the announcement. Florida Rep. Vern Buchanan (R) said a temporary fix is not good enough.

“Not good enough,” said Buchanan in a new statement. “There is no middle ground on this issue. The Pentagon needs to tell veterans it will permanently – not temporarily – end its obscene effort to collect enlistment bonuses from a decade ago. The government also should apologize to all the veterans affected.”

Buchanan sent a letter to Carter asking whether the bonus repayment process would affect Florida veterans as well.
