Cutting it Close: Speaker Election Will Happen Two Days Before Boehner's Resignation

Talk about cutting it close. On Oct. 28, just two days before John Boehner is set to retire from Congress, House Republicans will hold their new speaker election.

Kevin McCarthy’s withdrawal left the race wide open. After much prodding during closed door meetings, Rep. Paul Ryan tepidly agreed he would be open to running for speaker if he could unite the party. In other words, he wants the support of the House Freedom Caucus, an ultra conservative wing of the GOP. The caucus will be meeting with Ryan Wednesday afternoon. On Fox News, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said they are open to supporting him, but only if he leads in a way that does not conform to "business as usual."

One other condition: he would not give up his family time.

Ryan’s only opponent, should he choose to run, would be Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL).

At a press conference today on Capitol Hill, Boehner said Ryan would make a “great speaker.”
