The AP asked Obama's transition team if they were worried about the potential backlash from all the glitz and pomp around the Inauguration in the midst of a struggling economy.
The price tag is now in the range of $150 million and while Obama did raise a lot of private money for the festivities taxpayers are forced to pick up the costs of transportation and security.
"That is probably not the way the country is going to be looking at it," said transition committee spokeswoman Linda Douglass.
"It is not a celebration of an election. It is a celebration of our common values."
