Campaigning like it was 2008, Barack Obama’s political team raced to collect every possible dollar before Thursday’s midnight deadline in hopes of turning the first meaningful fundraising report of 2012 into a show of force.

There was campaign manager Jim Messina urging the faithful to help the president hit a record-breaking $60 million in combined Obama-DNC contributions. “If you’re planning on donating to this campaign at any point in the next 16 months…do it now,” he wrote about 12 hours before the critical second-quarter filing deadline.
