Some Fascinating Responses to the Mitt Romney Article

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

My recent article, Mitt Romney Is Not the Answer, generated an unusually high number of personal emails along with some fascinating comments.

The praise was effusive: “Michael Brown, this is the best column I have read on TH in years.” (Summers) “It’s very seldom that I agree with a column as completely as I agree with this one.” (Kepha) “Wow, I could have written this article myself, if I were so eloquent.” (Bob62) “Thank you, my sentiments and Christian beliefs, exactly!!!” (Angel56) “Mega-kudos for an article that ‘tells it like it is.’” (Billautonomy)

The criticism was equally effusive: “You hooked me with the title and lost me with the article. What a bunch of baloney.” (MatthewlovesAyn) “What a strange article. Mr. Brown seems very confused.” (stedes) “I think Mr. Brown (the Article writer) should maybe think of another profession, he’s completely lost it on this one, or maybe take more time to investigate what he plans to write. . . . Brown sounds like he fell off his rocker and has lost his mind.” (tallen) “RIGHT ON! Who the heck is he anyway. Never heard of him before. He is obviously quite full of himself. Quite the judgmental jerk if you ask me.” (cwilson482)

PsychoDad continued the love-fest, also raising another issue. “Well this column was a waste of pixels. For one claiming to be a Christian, you certainly seem involved with yourself. I’m so sorry that Jesus isn’t running for president, but thank you for deigning to vote for the best that we poor lost Republicans can come up with.”

Yes, it seems that I stirred things up with my lack of faith in the Republican establishment: “Why don’t you stop undermining the Republican Party and the man who has been chosen to take back America. I’m truly fed up with this type of blatant and continuous caterwauling. Let us move forward or live under a Marxist regime.” (MarieJ) “It should also be perfectly clear that carping about Romney helps Obama. Saying that they are the same is either ignorant or dishonest and plays into the hands of the liberal trolls.” (SWIT)

There were the expected allegations that I was not excited about Romney because he’s a Mormon: “Romney is a very good and decent man and the Brown type naysayers are really just Bigots - because he is a Mormon, and yes a christian!” (Tyke) “Romney is a Christian in the truest sense of the word but this guy infers that he is anything but. People’s ignorance makes me sick.” (cwilson482)

For the record, I’ve said numerous times my issue is not with Romney being a Mormon but rather with his past record in Massachusetts, which responds to Jimacree’s point: “After reading your excellent book on the ‘queer’ agenda I cannot believe you aren’t in full support of the only viable candidate against Obama, who just came out in support of queer marriage and has refused to defend DOMA.” I do hope you are right, Jimacree.

Others (wrongly) discerned a different, underlying issue: “Sounds like another disgruntled Ron Paul (or maybe Rick Santorum) supporter. This article is complete nonsense.” (Cartwright)

There were interesting comments regarding my contention that the people of America, even more than President Obama, are the cause of our greatest problems. “Yes, we have a problem and it’s us.” (Charles41) “I believe Mr. Brown hit the nail on the head. We the people have been the reason the country is in trouble.” (Cindy35)

Others took exception to this: “I strongly disagree with your opinion that Obama is not responsible for the violence in America. His racist rhetoric foments violence from any individuals who feel more disenfranchised than they feel blessed for their taxpayer support.” (Bill9666) “I am not going to take the rap for the situation in America. When you have a Congress that has been led by Reid and Pelosi, what chance does the regular citizen have in changing things in America?” (Jim134)

Dan107 had an interesting take: “Obama is not the cause of America’s malaise. However, he is a product of the cause of America’s malaise.”

There were the expected strong critics of Romney: “LET’S ALL VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO STANDS FOR NOTHING! MITT ROMNEY – SERIAL FLIP-FLOPPER.” (GaryPatriot)

There were relatively few staunch Romney supporters, which is telling (can you imagine the responses I would have received had I written “Ron Paul Is Not the Answer”?): “Mitt Romney is a fixer. He can, if given the chance, fix some of the things Obama has broken. America needs someone like Romney right now.” (Clint94)

And there were supporters of other candidates: “The answer is simple. Elect Ron Paul.” (RichGrise) “I agree. The answer was Newt, but the elite, parties and the media do not want him, he would stand up to them and work for the people not the system.” (Leb2)

Then some wonderfully weird comments: “Romney is a puppet of Benjamin Netanyahu, a man widely regarded as a looney hawk in his own nation.” (Surtr) This drew an appropriate rebuke: “Romney a puppet of Netanyahu? Man, woman or something between, Surtr, you gotta quit sucking down the hooch. That’s the dumbest dam thing I’ve read for a long time.” (Arley2)

The good news is that we now have the solution to America’s problems: “We the People took control of this nation in 1776, it’s time for We the People retake control of OUR nation in 2012. Obama, No NO NO, Romney No.No No Don Cordell yes. Yes YES.” (PresidentDon)

There you have it. The next president of the United States, Don Cordell. The answer.
