B.S. There is no rationing involved in the health care bill, and it certainly doesn't have anything alluding to a single payer system (I'm not exactly sure what it means, but it can't possibly be that bad.) These morons who go to these townhall meetings wouldn't know if the rods shoved up their butts had rods shoved up THOSE butts. By that I mean that they should just read the healthcare bill over the weekend. It's not that much harder to read than a Harry Potter novel (oh wait, I just remembered. I'm dealing with the Christianists jackballs of Liberty University, may Jerry Falwell rot in Hell and have his cajones boiled in molten hot lava, by all means.)

Start out with the premise that the demand for health care is infinite but the supply is finite so health care has to be rationed.

I trust the market, unfettered by governmental restrictions, more than the government.

The Canadian and British systems of health care reinforce my belief.

Tad, you missed the point! Obama made the point that private companies can compete with the USPS. The reason is because they are more efficient and, as a result, more cost effective. In conceding that point, Obama implicitly admitted that the US Post Office is inefficient and over budget.

So why should we embrace a federal government health care plan when the President admits that private companies can do a better job than a government agency in delivering services? The analogy is that obviously private enterprise can deliver health care more effectively and cost efficiently than the government.

UPS and FedEx only compete with the Post Office in one limited arena: package delivery. And they do it much more efficiently and cost-effective than the Post Office with its artificially "under market" pricing. As a small business owner, when I ship packages, I have discovered almost invariably that it is cheaper to mail a book via USPS, but it will almost ALWAYS arrive later than a package sent UPS or FedEx. However, the Post Office is running a $7 BILLION dollar deficit, is bloated and inefficient, and will never show a "profit" over the long term. Why? Because it doesn't have to, to stay in business. Obama's UPS/Fed-X analogy have been the source of unending comparisons by right-wing pundits, like Matt Barber, Larry Kudlow, Stephen Hayes, and others. But they all miss the point, in their rush to show Obama's gaffe.

Obama was trying to show that a private company could successfully compete with a public one—in answer to a questioner. He wasn't saying that the public company would be profitable in that pursuit. After all, if the post office would have to show a profit on ordinary mail delivery, you might be paying $44 to mail a letter, instead of 44 cents. How would you like that?

A comprehensive, free market plan exists that transitions those on government programs to a new plan while private business builds what those on Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP need. Then the new government plan is PHASED OUT for private plans. That plan also must support itself (no “deep pockets”) and it is MEANS-TESTED (no free rides on the taxpayer’s dime.)
The plan is catastrophic care that is means-tested with a prevention focus. It would be open to all citizens while more private plans are created. That will happen because regulations are drastically reduced and plans sold across state lines. Private plans also get tax credits to enroll the poor and the sick.
