All problems of the world are based on fear. This includes racism. Having been hurt by whites, blacks are understandably fearful. Whites are fearful because they are at the top of the food chain and are afraid they may get deposed by this group or that group. Simply fill in the blank with the current minority of the day. Those in power tend to flex their muscles in times of economic or sociopolitical uncertainty. I just want to add that fear does not come from God. Therefore we must become Godly in our fight to overcome racism and all other problems we face as a nation. Racism and claims of Racism today have little if anything to do with moral or Christian roots. It has everything to do with positioning for money and privilege. The goal is to be declared a special class eligible for special privileges. To make matters worse, anyone who doesn't agree with Obama is automatically branded a Racist even though their disagreement has nothing to do with Race. The same applies to the African Americans with whom Obama has surrounded himself.

Donjindra: You can assert that if you wish, but your assertion doesn't make that true. A large percentage of the Founders were ministers. Others were officers in churches. The founding of this country was based is scripture, believe it or not. You have only to look at the wording in some of the state constitutions and the Mayflower Compact - the first governmental document on this continent - to see that's true. The idea that the founders were secularists is blarney!

Mary, the Mayflower Compact was not a founding document of the USA. The Constitution has no biblical influence in it. Obviously we are a secular country. That is not to say -- and I did not say -- that the founders were complete secularists. That's .a straw man. However, there is no reason to believe a religious man cannot help found a secular nation. There is no compelling reason to think a religious man must mix things of man with things of God. Our founders understood this.

Donjindra: Regarding government defining morality - I agree with you. Government doesn't qualify to define it. Moral and immoral behavior were defined millennia ago in the Holy Bible. The U. S. Constitution and various state constitutions and local laws were implemented to comply with many, though not all, of the Ten Commandments, such as "Thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness," etc. Many of us have come to regard the commandments in the Bible as more like guard posts on dangerous highways than as "killjoys."

No one predicted the problems and pitfalls of socialism/liberalism/progressivism better than Dostoevsky did 150 years ago in books like The Brothers Karamazov and The Devils.

Donjindra: The "Voodoo" economics of Reagan were the same principles favored by JFK who said something to the effect that while It seems counter-intuitive, the more you raise taxes, the less you get in the coffers. He suggested lowering everyone's taxes go the government would get more money. Reagan did the same thing and it worked. The same is true of Bush #44. I suppose that the reason is that when taxes are lower, employers hire more people, so more people are taxed, which then raises the amount of taxes collected.

Mary, I don't find JFK much of an expert on the matter no matter what he might have said. This voodoo economics has been a failure. Anybody can borrow and spend beyond their means. It makes for good times for a little while. But what you see as success is an illusion. We're paying now and we'll pay even more in the future.

Hey, E; I understand your pain. Christians often "shoot their wounded" and act pious and superior, but those are usually pretty immature Christians. The Christians most likely to really be there for you are the more mature ones; those that know just how deeply flawed they are, but are still willing to point you toward the only source of true fulfillment and happiness: Jesus Christ. Accepting Jesus is not the same as joining a club of disappointing Christians, but, to be honest, are you the best person you could be?

Summers, I didn't fall for Republican propaganda. I never expected Obama to stop the war in Afghanistan. I didn't expect him to pull out troops in Iraq any faster than a Republican. I do hope taxes go up because that's the only realistic way to address the revenue problem. And it's okay if my and my wife's financial situation goes down a little. We're doing okay. I pay my bills. I have no debt. Money doesn't rule my life. A measly 4 percent higher taxes is not going to make me suffer. There are far more important things in life. Nevertheless, I don't want the US government to create debt in my name.

Mary: I favor moral conduct too. But I doubt government is in a position to promote it or even define what it is.

I am not against the war in Afghanistan. That was clearly warranted. Bush blew the opportunity by engaging in a war in Iraq that was against our national interest. Not only did we waste money and lives in Iraq, but we ruined Iraq as geopolitical counter to Iran and even Saudi Arabia -- much more troublesome problems.

But debt itself is an ongoing issue. I partly blame Reagan (who I voted for). He listened to bad economic advice. And worse, he convinced conservatives in a voodoo economics where debt doesn't matter as long as taxes are low. If Reagan wanted to strengthen our military -- and I wanted the same -- he should...
