'Courageous' to open in 50 new cities

ALBANY, Ga. (BP) -- The church-made film "Courageous" -- the top-fan rated movie in the U.S. according to one major website -- will play in about 50 new cities this weekend.

Courageous is the latest film from Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany., Ga., and was No. 4 on opening weekend and No. 6 on its second weekend, despite playing in less than half of the theaters as other films. Its per-theater average was No. 1 in its first weekend and No. 3 in its second weekend.

It remains very popular heading into its third weekend. Fandango.com, a leading movie-ticketing website, lists it at as the No. 1 fan-rated movie, ahead of "Reel Steel," "Dolphin Tale," "50/50" and "Moneyball." Viewers gave it an average score of 4.9 out of 5. Courageous also is one of just four movies this year to receive an A+ exit poll score from viewers in CinemaScore ratings.

The movie follows the story of five men -- four of them police officers -- as they seek to become better fathers. It played in 1,161 theaters the past two weekends. Most other films were in at least 2,300 theaters.
