Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Voltaire is credited with the statement: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Freedom and democracy necessarily rest upon this sentiment, an attitude that today we find in dangerously short supply. Instead, politics has become a blood sport.

That’s what WDIV-TV, Detroit’s channel 4 said in a news report concerning folks called “blockers,” whose job is to stop voters from signing a petition.

In this case, the petition is to recall Michigan’s Speaker of the House Andy Dillon over a massive tax increase. People are hurting in Michigan. But legislators — led by Dillon — decided taxpayers should hurt some more. They raised taxes so that government spending could grow more than three-quarters of a billion dollars.

During the legislative debate, taxpayers threatened legislators with recall over the tax hike. Now they’re doing the politically unthinkable: keeping their word.

Of course, Michigan’s political elite has derided the recall with hysteria and hyperbole: How dare the people use a legal process to hold their representatives accountable?!

I, on the other hand, find the recall effort eminently reasonable.

But whether Dillon is to be recalled should not be up to the elite — or to me. It should be up to whether enough citizens in the district freely sign the petition and, if enough voters sign, how residents then decide to cast their votes.

But the blockers seek to remove “freely sign” from my previous sentence. At The New Media Journal, Warner Todd Huston writes that “blockers scream at petition signers, calling them names, and hover menacingly over them making them feel threatened and intimidated.” Rose Bogaert of the Wayne County Taxpayers Association told reporters, “They’re literally behaving like thugs out there. They’ve torn up our petitions, followed us home. . . .”

Who are these brutes? It turns out many of them are on the state payroll. In fact, several work for none other than Speaker Dillon.

Speaker Dillon’s office claims the blockers on his staff are doing all of this of their own volition, even taking vacation time to do so. Yeah, right. Maybe that’s the plan now that they’ve been caught.

Leon Drolet, the head of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance, isn’t buying it. And he’s not amused. He’s offering $250 a pop “to anyone who can positively identify the name and address of any of the thug blockers. The information will be used for the purpose of filing individual federal civil rights violation lawsuits against these thugs.”

Note that Michigan law only allows people living in the legislator’s district to petition for the recall, while Speaker Dillon’s staffers and other blockers can and are coming from all over the state (and reportedly even from out of state). Similar activity has been seen in other states, where those collecting petition signatures are restricted in all sorts of ways, while those seeking to deny these people their First Amendment rights are under no restrictions whatsoever.

Dillon’s tax increase was a travesty. Using state workers to violate citizens’ most basic constitutional rights is, well, worse.

But brace yourself. What the politician and special-interest-funded blockers in Michigan are doing by intimidation and harassment, politicians and special interests in Florida are trying to do through legislation.

Republican Senator Bill Posey’s bill, SB 2340, is pretty simple: ban non-residents from helping to circulate a petition, require anyone who is paid to circulate a petition to register with the government, charge people a fee for petitioning, force those petitioning to give personal information like home address, even home phone number, and tell the state — and, because it is a public record, also tell the blockers — the measures with which one is associated.

This last requirement is in the bill so that groups like the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center can better target their blocking campaigns and won’t be harassing the wrong petitioners. They don’t want to mistakenly harass a person petitioning for a “progressive” cause. No doubt, the Florida Chamber of Commerce feels the same way. Only reversed.

Why outlaw people from other states helping to circulate the petition? Because it makes it harder to get enough people capable of overcoming obstacles — gee whiz, you mean like people harassing them? — to gather enough voter signatures. If you want to block measures from the ballot raise the bar higher and higher.

No other job in politics requires residency. Not lobbyists, not campaign managers, not the 30-second ad wizards. But the petitioner seems always a threat to those in power. The others all work for them.

Charge those petitioning their government a fee? Next thing you know, we will have to purchase our constitutional rights one by one. I thought they’d been paid for many times over in blood and vigilance.

One of the key things Posey’s bill does is allow the state to throw out a voter’s signature for some technical mistake made by the petitioner. This would work against a common-sense principle of democracy: Just like every legitimate voter should get to cast a vote that counts, every legitimate voter ought to be able to have their signature count.

Sen. Posey is supposedly “on the right.” It has been widely held that his bill seeks to restrict the voter initiative process only because that’s the road upon which “a liberal measure,” the Hometown Democracy initiative, might get to the people.

Voltaire and I do not need to know what the Hometown Democracy measure does, whether it be right or left, wise or foolish. It is enough that we know what SB 2340 does. It destroys democracy. So that Posey and his posse can win a political battle.

At a hearing on the bill, John French of Save Our Constitution urged legislators to go after paid signature-gatherers, whom he referred to as “gypsies,” arguing, “We really need to know who these people are.”

I couldn’t help but think of the last time they went after the Gypsies.

Jared Ross of the American Cancer Society asked, “Why do we need to keep making the process more difficult?”

The answer: To stop democracy, to silence the people, to allow power to triumph over freedom.

I'm so sick of "Civil Rights"
"The information will be used for the purpose of filing individual federal civil rights violation lawsuits against these thugs."

CIVIL RIGHTS?

Look, if a thug is threatening you, harassing you, intimidating you, following you home --

-- isn't said thug breaking some law other than "civil rights"? How about assault, harassment, stalking?

Thugs like that need to be locked up. We've got plenty of "normal" laws that cover this kind of mis-behavior.

Anger Management
People are already frustrated because of laws that favor incumbents getting reelected. When they do things like this it raises the level from just frustration to active anger. When the sheep become angry and it spreads to a significant number of them things will change. Either the politicians will get the message or the people will get angry enough to start killing them.

They call that revolution folks.

Welcome to a Democrat Controlled Town

Welcome to my pain, living in a Democrat controlled town. They have snipped and stripped rights and abilities from what one can do to your property to ones inability to decern where all the money goes.

I don't think most republicans realize that Cities controlled locally by Democrats are a very real issue for this and future Presidential elections. With Demographics shifting to mega-cities with substantive control by Democrats due to growth in governemnt (or in this case, the only large employer in town paying almost guarenteed wages)is an unhealthy evolution

If capable Republicans of good charachter would but rebuild their parties. The Democrats are becoming increasingly contemptous and agressive about staying in local power.

Thank you for using this as a fulcrum for action. Hopefully there is a Republican movement growing in such places for I sincerely believe our freedom depends on it.

Welcome to the
Liberals world of Socialism/Fascism! This should come as no surprise since the Liberals have been installing and using their Nazi, SS tactics for years. Go against the Socialist Party (Liberals) and they will try and shut you down by ANY means necessary!

The Liberals posting here on Town Hall prove this on a daily basis with their constant attack on our Constitution! Watch how the Liberals will attack the writer of this article, me and anyone else that stands against the Liberal/Socialist advance.

Vic: Your right. Don't know how much longer the sheepeople will take it before a shooting revolution takes place.

LIBERALISM IS ALIVE AND WELL
Liberalism is alive and well in the Democrat Party and among RINOs (Republicans In Name Only). The latter are the type of Republican earlier generations called blue blood, country club, establishment, me too, moderate, and Rockefeller.

Liberalism is alive and well because its true believers are typically people with supersize money and talent, gold and platinum plated degrees from top tier universities, and have either no children or are have limited themselves to one or two children. Thus they have all the resources they need to carry out their reign of terror.

NO ONE BUT THE DEMS.
No one loves taxes more than the Dems. They live, sleep and breathe taxes. Been their answer for everything. Since forever!

CRIME: No problem. The answer? Why it's a 20 million dollar youth center, of course. Everything will be fine and dandy now. The center will be shot to hell in one year but who cares about that. Do you like the center? Hey! You paid for it.

HOUSING FOR THE POOR: Never a problem. The answer? Spend billions on low-income developments. The libs. and dems. never understand that people resent charity. What a difference if there is something you worked for. Something you spent your own money for. Something that is "yours". That's a part of the real answer. But who cares. Who pays for the low-income housing? YOU DO! Let the middle class pay for everything. Nothing gives Dems. more joy than seeing you hand over your hard earned bucks.

It's endless. They'll tax everything and anything under the sun. That's what this "hope" and "change" stuff Hussein keeps carrying on about is really about. Call it the big "Hope and Change Lie" because there's not much "hope" to it. "Change"? Hardly.

It's just the tax and spend policy of the Dems. which Hussein, if elected, is ready to take to new heights.

Uh, let me guess . . .
since there was no political affiliation mentioned in the main article, I assume the reference stories in the local media also supressed that information in their reports also. If it was a "RELIGIOUSLY" affiliated group behind these actions we would see it in CAPITAL letters. Or a "REPUBLICAN" or "CONSERVATIVE." Maybe "DICK CHENEY" or "HALLIBURTON." I noticed the Florida transgressor was labelled as a "Republican" aptly. But the Michiganites are called politically correct "blockers." But it's ok because they're vacationing in Michigan instead of Florida where everyone else goes for Spring Break. Kinda like Union thugs expressing their free speech by promising to peacefully break your knee caps in the tradition of Democracy by intimidation. There's that word again: Democracy. Wow, that's the root word for "democrat" . . . ah, I might be on to something here . . .

Vic
Agreed. When Americans finally get mad, watch out!

GunnyG
Morning Gunny, good to see ya back.

my 2 cents
The late Charlton Heston was once a democrat and then he changed to the republican party. When asked how his politics had changed he said something to the effect that "my politics didn't change, the democrats changed".

Perhaps food for thought

2 more cents
Perhaps I was trying to be cute with the last post. After a quick glance in the mirror - quick enuff to keep it from cracking, I realized that perhaps it would be better just to state that we need a democratic party as the oppositon to keep some bone-headed republicans from getting out of hand.

We NEED a democratic party with GROWN-UPS. We DON'T need Howard Dean, we DON'T need Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or any of them. We NEED people like Joseph Lieberman and Richard Gephart.

Lisa writes:
“Demographics shifting to mega-cities with substantive control by Democrats due to growth in governemnt (or in this case, the only large employer in town paying almost guarenteed wages)is an unhealthy evolution.”

Similarities occurred in Europe post WWII. Communism in the east and gradually socialism further west. Beginning in the metropolitan cities (were the power resides) then spreading throughout more urban areas, until eventually the entire populace or country was affected. Take a look at Western Europe now.

However, we do have sometime the Europeans don’t… the second amendment. But even that’s in the courts again, isn’t it. Think it can’t happen here?

Gypsies, tramps and thieves
I think that common citizens have accepted big government too long. It's time to nip it in the bud or we'll all be under totalitarianism.

Keep it in the States
Non-residents should not be permitted to cross state lines to petition for or against state elected officials. Imagine some ultra-wing group (left or right) organizing to come and vote out your elected official. There goes the majority…and neighborhood.

But on the other hand, I agree that these “blockers” are crossing the line…no pun intended. The playing field needs to be leveled.

It's happening in Montgomery County, MD
Last November, the County Council passed the Transgender Equality Bill. Among other things, men claiming to be women would be free to strut into women's rooms, and vice versa. A group of us called Citizens for a Responsible Government, successfully petitioned that to ballot. That petition-gathering effort was met with much harrassment by transgendered folks and other liberals. They were actually there, trying to steer people away from our tables, passing out their "Decline to Sign" flyers. They tried to engage us in debate, saying we had no right to be there. Of course they've got lawyers to challenge the petition and signatures. To read our account, go to notmyshower.net; to read our opponents' bloviations, go to teachthefacts.org.

By the way, while we were collecting signatures, a like-minded citizen said a bunch of women should follow Ike Leggett into the men's room to complain about the bill. He's the County Chair who championed the bill and basically called us idiots. Well, that interesting prospect is now moot. You see, he just built himself a private bathroom off his office, complete with shower and sitting area. Only he has access to it. Now how much did his escape from that law cost the Montgomery County taxpayer? A mere $65,000.00! Such a trivial pittance!

Bravo!
I think it would be better for the American taxpayer to be dealing with the gypsies and tramps than the thieves that are otherwise known as elected officials. I say "Bravo!" to those citizens who are in opposition to governmental theft. Keep up the good work! I agree with MrRoy. I am not a fan of totalitarianism, either.

LL in LA
Welcome to TH.

I was also surprised Paul Jacob did not note the Michigan House Speaker's political affiliation. Checked in out. Yep! Andy Dillon is a Democrat.

I guess Paul just figured that any human being with an ounce of intelligence would know Dillon has to be a Dem. Who else but a Democrat would push a massive tax increase in a state devastated by a job loss. This is a state that once had one of the highest, middle class incomes in the nation! These same people now struggle to keep their homes.

Andy Dillon's answer? TAX THEM!

Psychotic Liberals...

Michigan Democrats have started a drive to raise the Gasoline Tax. They seem to need a Billion dollars to fix the roads. (again)

One Democrat booster explained, "It's quite likely our next President will raise the Federal gasoline tax in 2009. So, we must act quickly, and move on this increase soon."

I'm assuming this booster is worried that Michigan voters would not be happy if Democrats try to hike the gas tax after Obama and Hillary do.

Maybe the MSM should ask the candidates how much they plan to hike gasoline taxes? Especially since quite a few of their Lefty boosters are calling for a Hike.

state workers
Those folks going after the people getting up the petitions must be real smart.Helping their bosses raise their taxes.

TRUE TAX REFORM
We the people pay all taxes, and we are the sole ultimate source of all tax revenue. Regardless where government initially collects the money, all tax money ultimately comes from us, the people, even though business has to pay thousands or millions of dollars at one time, and get it back from us one dollar at a time.
Since we the people are the one and only source of all tax revenue:
There should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue.
It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, graduated, individual, full-income tax levied on living persons for each level of government: One Tax and Done.
The best thing that government can do to help the country, the people, and even government, is to repeal all of the many hundreds, or thousands of existing taxes, fees, and charges. These taxes are the federal deficit. These taxes are the high price of everything. These tax eliminations are spending cuts. Every tax that is eliminated is a tax that we the people no longer have to pay. These taxes are the difference between the price we pay for health care and everything else, and the price we would pay if these taxes were repealed. Eliminating these taxes will remove them from the price paid for everything by everyone, including government.
One Tax and Done will provide many benefits to all, even government:
One Tax and Done will reduce the price paid for everything by one-third.

Throw the bum out.
In California we recalled Gov. Gray Davis with great joy. It can be done if the people find a leader who is a more attractive replacement. Go get em'. The power in this Country belongs to the people until they give it up without a fight.
BobNews

My Mistake
Folks,
Indeed, I should have identified Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon as a Democrat. In fact, I meant to do so. Thank you T.C. for researching and reporting it.
My point is that trampling on our basic freedoms to win (for any side -- left, right or other) is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Part of my point is that such attacks are not confined to one party or the other. Though, the use of goon squads has certainly been more of a tactic of the unionized left. At least in recent times.

Thanks Paul
For stopping by.

And thanks for the excellent column.

My solution ...
...were I a petitioner and the "blocker" is "a thug is threatening you, harassing you, intimidating you, following you home", as has been described.

There would very shortly be one less "thug". I don't think it would take but one to go missing before the others got the message.

We play to nice with some of these people. Before it's over it's going to take some internecine bloodletting upon the land. I can't think of finer candidates for draining than these types.

KansasGirl
Time to get the mattresses.

It's no longer GOP v. Democratic Party!
It's us, as in "We the People" vs. them as in the political elite at all levels.

We ain't seen nothin' yet in terms of them attmepting to steal our liberties in spite of the massive forays into that realm already!

Sad.

Thugs.....
should not be allowed to interfere with the civil rights of the citizens period. If these thugs are indeed interfering with people signing a petition they need to be confronted. If that means going to federal court so be it.

Before anyone starts shooting ...
there are at least a couple of things to keep in mind. In the American Revolution there were a third who were patriots, another third who went which ever way the wind blew and the final third who were loyalists.
I think the small faithful remnant who might be considered American patriots are far less than a third as do the politicos.
The second thing to consider is who controls the food supply. The guys on top wouldn't think twice about starving the population.
As an aside, recall that in the interest of world order, Bill the dicky waver signed on to a UN resolution that opens the door for foreign invasion in the event of civil disruption.
These guys have all the time in the world to play tyrant, and your neighbors support them. All part of being a post Christian nation.

The real solution
I look at the world as a very conservative individual. My frustration has no bounds. I believe that any clear thinking person by now realizes that, for an almost infinite number of reasons, the once great U.S.A. is doomed. The real solution, my fantasy, is to round up every politician, public "worker," illegal invader and every other group robbing me blind and destroying what little is left of this country, put them on an island in the middle of the Pacific and nuke it. Thanks for allowing me my silly little rant.

I'm surprised!
No liberals have stuck up for these guys yet! The union jerks don't seem to understand that it is precisely the unions they support that have caused most of the jobs in the auto industry to leave Detroit. Why use American union workers, who demand wages and benefits that cost companies double what non-American or non-union workers do?

Intimidation works for them, but that's the only way they get what they want from American workers nowadays. They can only get a company's workers to unionize if they get Congress to get rid of secret balloting. They can only get more union workers in many states because the states have made it the law that if a certain trade has a union, ALL workers MUST join the union. They HATE FREEDOM!

Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg
Thuggery has matastized to the state and district level.
I recall my grandfather talking about Woodrow Wilson's brutal activities. Wilson had a propaganda machine to brainwash the peons. There were thousands of political prisoners who were beaten, harassed and jailed because they expressed their opinions. One had to be careful where they expressed their opinions.
Franklin Roosevelt pledged to re-create the socialism of Wilson. That is the real inspiration of the New Deal.
To learn the facts about our current crop of liberal fascists please read Jonah Goldgerg's LIBERAL FACISM. effielane

Every day
I become more and more (if possible) disillusionalized by our whole political environment. We the people are always on the loosing end. We do not have any statesmen anymore. The people we vote for are not our representatives anymore. Once in those power positions they become our rulers and dictators.

Freedom in Michigan
If Michigan chooses to raise taxes let them. Don't come whining to the rest of us about unemployment and businesses moving out. There is a cause and effect relationship here.

Government thinks it can continue to raise taxes and not control spending and the citizenry just has to take it.

"Socialism will last until they have spent everyone else's money" Margaret Thatcher. But don't listen to her. She is not from Michigan.

If you read about the Founding Fathers you will know that the reason they put into law the right of the citizenry to petition the government is to avoid the citizens rising up with arms against the government. I guess that is also why government is trying to restrict the right to own a gun.

These are your rights slowly being flushed down the drain. To many my words sound like just another nut case. To those I say, don't whine to the rest of us when your rights are gone. We tried to tell you.

Tibby

Our best days may be behind us
Since anyone who advocates use of force to effect Govt. change can technically be charged with Treason, we should all choose our words wisely. Having said all that,i have ranted for several years that unless our elected officials start to enforce our laws, America will soon be owned by Mexicans and Muslims.Of course i have been labeled a racist by every liberal that i come into contact with. All the negative comments that are contained in this article would be moot if only our elected officials weren't more concerned about gaining a political advantage than addressing the wishes of majority of American LEGAL taxpayers.

In case no one has noticed
The government is led these days by the same old whores in different night gowns. Dem? Repub?

Same deal...we all need to be really pi**ed off.

Woody from Iowa

Why I hate the stars & stripes.
I consider myself an ultra-conservative. This is not the wonderful country where I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s. Let me tell you what the stars and stripes represents. It is the symbol of a government that is my sworn enemy, I being an senior, white, Christian male of European ancestry. This totally corrupt, perverted government represents the over-pampered, overpaid, over-perked, over-pensioned, greedy, ungrateful teacher, cop, and all other public parasites. It represents illegal aliens, homosexuals, Muslims, criminals, the welfare class, the poor oppressed minorities-not, white insane liberals with their mental disorder, etc., etc., etc. These groups steal my money and destroy my culture. People such as Rush Limbaugh and other delusion supposed conservatives are more insane than the liberals they rail against if they think there is any hope for this once great country.

lives, fortunes, sacred honor
Interesting to see so many posters are reaching the needed level of frustration.

A wholesale bloodbath is not required to return this nation's sovereignty to its rightful place, the legitamate populace.

There is another way.

Unca Alby
"Thugs like that need to be locked up. We've got plenty of "normal" laws that cover this kind of mis-behavior."

You're making the assumption that the cops will enforce the "normal" laws.

Massachusetts
I live in Massachusetts where this crap is commonplace.

Years ago, we citizens of Massachusetts passed a binding resolution to install term limits here in this state. The state legislature simply ignored it and buried it somewhere.

We have no opposition party here - the legislature is overwhelmingly Democrat (nearly 80%) and even our empty-suit governor (a mini Obama - all style and no substance) is discovering that he has absolutely no power to change anything that our little dictator, Speaker Sal Dimasi, doesn't want changed.

It's actually kind of funny to watch Deval Patrick get the same treatment that Republican governors have been receiving all these years. In Massachusetts, the governor is a mere figurehead.

Talk, talk, talk!
The reality is that yesterday ain't what you imagine & tomorrow won't be either. Americans will never get out the guns in revolt. They don't like each other that much. There will always be an elite running things. And they will always be corrupt. 'Good times' are boring. Bored people stir up the pot. You're back to square-one.

Ex-Michigander and Ex-Californian writes
Friends, I can feel the level of displeasure, with all the insults to the taxpaupers growing daily. pb, I do not agree, but I know thaat prior to Pearl Harbor, citizens were not concerned, but they had a higher caliber in their personalities, and a pride in our nation. When this country was attacked in December 1941, these people magically joined together, created a giant war machine, and kicked butt, big time. We regarded our freedom and liberties highly, and not that even today, our Army is on a vclunteer basis. Ladies and gentlemen, that spirit is still alive in this nation, and in time you will see it. A stun gun in your pocket can be a totally unexpected surprise, and other things, rolls of coins, heavy canes, and as potential guerillas, you might need to exercise that brain to defend yourself against these thugs. Fight every bit as dirty as they do, cripple each one of them and they will disaappear from the streets , faster than dust in a rainstorm. Don't ever lose that fighting spirit that still dwells deep inside each citizen and veteran. We fought for liberty once, and now we will do it again. Think about how you are letting a few bullies run your lives. When you elected elite, dripping their excesses, boo them out of the public arenas.

I watched it happen in Michigan, again in California, people can do as they wish, if the people do not fight back. Watch the first part of May for a big demonstration in Los Angeles, and other major cities. Do something! Don't just sit in youe homes and tremble. Fight the liberal at the polls, so we do not have to fight them in the streets.

Thank You Two Canes
Well said!

It's never alright
to limit the rights of the people to have a voice. This kind of restricivte behavior is more likely to come from neo-cons than from the left these days, but anyone with power seems to feel justified to keep and increase it whatever the cost. These "politicians" don't care about this country or what kind of injustice and tyranny they leave in their wake. As with the Bush camp, who agressively pursued a strategy of voter caging in the 2004 race, the ends justify the means.

What kills me is the tendency on the right to give the "ok" to these tactics when it is one of their own. This used to be the signature of the left. They would always defend their own, right or wrong. Conservatives used to insist on integrity from their own, but now they give their blessing to the most outrageous abuses in the name of pragmatism, thereby selling the soul of conservatism.

How dare any generation believe that they should have the last word on how public policy will be decided? These kinds of laws cut away our liberties at the root and leave no avenue for future generations to amend our errors.

Quite an enlightening piece. But would like to see other posts re: the supreme court's refusal to hear such cases eg. We The People v. United States in a landmark case just this year. D.M.
