Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"It's that time again. Throngs of delirious Democrats are invading the streets and suites of Washington to celebrate their victories in November.

"Across town, members of that other party gather in hushed bands, mourning their loss of power, employment and staff. The more prolific have taken the op-ed pages of every newspaper as their pillories, to flog themselves for their defeat.

"As a member of that other party, enough is enough. It is time to look forward, not back."

I wrote those words for a column in February 1993. Back then, the future of the GOP could not have looked dimmer. The party needed to refocus and recharge. The following year Republicans took control of both chambers of Congress and state legislatures across the country.

Now, after two disastrous election cycles, it is clear the Republican Party must refocus again. A reenergized GOP must make Republican principles appealing both to its base and also to the changing face of America. If the party of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan wants to return to power, it must become the party of the 21st century.

Right now, like then, we are conducting a detailed post-mortem to figure out what went wrong.

Some are blaming the party for moving too far to the right, losing moderate and independent voters to the Democrats. These people say social issues such as gay marriage and abortion should be replaced by economic issues. Others say the party has moved too far to the middle, demobilizing core supporters. These people cite the No Child Left Behind Act, agriculture subsidies, and now the $700 billion mega-bailout as examples of big-government policies.

Still others say that nothing is wrong with the party, and all the blame lies with John McCain and his campaign. They cite a lack of organization, a coherent theme, consistent strategy, and various missteps as leading to the GOP defeat.

Finally, some say that it's the president's fault, and the Republican Party simply could not win in this environment. They cite President Bush's low approval ratings, the percentage of voters who think the country is on the wrong track, and the declining economy as creating a no-win situation.

America is a center-right country, both economically and socially. The majority of Americans support domestic energy development, low taxes, and allowing people choice in their retirement planning and their children's education. The majority of Americans also support marriage between a man and woman, restrictions on abortion, protecting common religious expressions such as "one nation under God," and Second Amendment freedoms.

On these and many other issues, the Republican Party embraces what the majority of Americans believe, and the Democratic Party opposes those same positions. These policies naturally flow from the basic Republican principles of limited government, economic opportunity and personal responsibility. Such policies represent the three legs of the Reagan Coalition: economic conservatives, social conservatives, and national-security conservatives.

Unfortunately, Republicans have not been true to Republican principles. Federal spending has been at utterly disgraceful levels for years. The past eight years have seen a massive expanse of federal power into areas formerly left to the states or to individuals. The plain truth is that some of the things that President Bush and the Republican majority did gave conservatives a bad name, and so the GOP lost the voters' trust.

These repeated and constant failures sapped the energy out of the GOP base. It led to some voters staying home or not contributing their time and money. Some even jumped ship in protest.

Republicans have failed to communicate new and innovative ideas to persuade new voting blocs that GOP principles are something they should support. Hispanics, working women and Reagan Democrats can all be persuaded to vote for the GOP. Republicans must have solutions that reach these voters where they are. And there are solutions that represent Republican principles that can win their support.

Michelangelo is said to have denied he was a great sculptor. He said the beauty of his work was already in the rock, and all he did was find the masterpiece within it. It is time for emerging Republican leaders to become the Michelangelos who again unleash the beauty and power within the rock of GOP beliefs. Republicans must excite, energize and mobilize their base, while reuniting old coalitions and forming new ones. They must provide bold and innovative leadership to recapture that sense of optimism and opportunity.

In 1994, the party refocused and found its way back. It will do so again.

SEEMS LIKE A GREAT ARITCLE BUT????

How does it measure up to the CFR Core beliefs of Regionalism and One World Government Mr Blackwell???? How does it measure up to the fact that if we loose our country none of this really matters?

Its like this Kenneth: Its like re-arranging the chairs on the deck of the TITANIC. Do you even get what this means?

How can Mr Blackwell even write such an article without addressing his membership in the CFR which is a Marxist organization as defined by one of their founders...i.e....Edward Mandel House?

In fact, how can the disingenuous Globalists like Newt Gingrich, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Dick Cheney and all the re-treads of Globalism such as George Will and yourself included explain belonging to such a group whose main goal is World Government and the break-up of these United States and the birth of a Regional Nafta Constitution to replace our own U.S. Constitution. Yours and others membership in this group is treasonous and the height of hypocrisy.

It sounds like merry go round!
Yes, refocus and refocus and making the Democratic Party getting more energized after each circus of refocusing, right?

Never ever in the history of America has an incoming President been handed a mess as now is being handed to Obama, by that refocused Republican Party, right?

Ron Paul, was the man for the Republican Party who wanted to refocus America upon the Foundation it was founded! Of course it was this refocssed party that told him to go to hell!

Yes, I was delighted to vote for him in Calfornia as a write in candidate. Thank you California for making it possible!

Be honest
No spin. The GOP needs to return to its center-right principles, and find leaders to firmly, passionately and honestly espouse them -- and convince the voters that these are best for America as a whole, and not pander to any individual group.

The Republican Party ? Conservatism.
They are not the same and they should never be confused as such.

“The plain truth is that some of the things that President Bush and the Republican majority did gave conservatives a bad name, and so the GOP lost the voters' trust.”

If you are no longer guided by conservative principles you are no longer a conservative party. The core GOP philosophy is no longer Conservatism. It is Liberalism.

The GOP can never give Conservatives or Conservatism a bad name. The GOP can only give Pseudo-Con Centrist Republicans a bad name. It is unfortunate that even a Republican leader like Mr. Blackwell seems to confuse the Republican Party with Conservatives.

Today’s GOP has given Conservatives a bad name only in the limited sense that many people are now confused as to what Conservatism is. They look at the GOP and incorrectly assume that it and its governance are conservative.

‘Compassionate Conservatism’ is an oxymoron. Conservatism is defined by conservative positions on both fiscal and social issues. Not one or the other.

It is time for the Republican Party to permanently exit the stage.

It all has to do with our roots
The core beliefs as a country.

Freedom of speech, religion and defend our self.
I dont undersatand how even a left winger can be happy about losing their rights??

I hope you are right!
You say the party will find its way again... I HOPE SO!

Republicans (under bush) have lost it's backbone and true identity. Bush should be ashamed at his pathetic attempt at a legacy-saver (he has a GREAT legacy of safety in a terrorist world). Stop trying to be "compassionate" at the expense of conservative (and godly) values.

Ken is Correct!
The GOP lost its way. In order to win, we must reconnect with our forgotten principles (i.e. sanctity of life, fiscal responsibility, and federalism). We must also get rid of the RINOs. Otherwise, we will go the way of the Whigs!

Obama not a NATURAL BORN US Citizen!
GOP'S strength would be to UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU!

...it just may be our LAST.

It is our duty as American citizens to oversee our constitution, remember we do not have an emperor or a king, we have a democratic republic: FOR the people and BY THE PEOPLE, WE are the people!

Sign the petitions – DEMAND OBAMA PROVE HE’S A NATURAL U.S. BORN CITIZEN

Don, voting Dem makes the country look
more liberal than it is. Why not vote for Libertarian and/or Constitution Party candidates instead? Your vote would then be seen for what it is - a rejection of the GOP for not being conservative enough rather than being too conservative.

Great article!
Reagan Conservatism WORKS. Why Republicans keep straying I'll never understand. Every year, all Republican leadership should have to watch Reagan's speeches, particularly "A Time For Choosing" (which you can watch here:)

Next year, I want to be able to say that I'm thanful that Congressional RINOs started standing for Reagan Conservative values:

GOP Strength Rests in Its Core Beliefs
I am a Goldwater/Reagan conservative but I have voted straight Democrat since 2006 in an effort to help dump each and everyone of these fake conservatives who have been running under the Republican-Socialist Party banner the last ten years or so.

Once the left-wing, liberals of the Republican-Socialist Party are defeated and flushed down the toilet, we conservatives may return to the Party and help save America from the communist/socialist crowd presently running the United States of America.

McCain foolish to try to appeal...
to the ignorant, poor Hispanic...

Amnesty John McCain and Hussein Obama were on the same page about ILLEGAL aliens (a path to citizenship), so it did not really become an issue with a distinction. [The Faustian strategy to try to appeal to poor Hispanic voters sure worked for Amnesty John, huh? Hispanics tend to be poor, so they WILL vote with the left... all he did was alienate Middle Americans.] But 70%+ of Americans prefer enforcement of EXISTING LAWS and gradual attritive repatriation versus a path to citizenship.

If we made citizens of 12-20 million poor, they would morph into 60-100 million of the same within 20 years per the Heritage foundation, and America would ineluctably PERMANENTLY become a big government welfare state third world country. Especially with an economic crisis and rising unemployment among those entitled to be here, NOW is NOT THE TIME to fathom embracing welfare cases in waiting.

The left won this election because CINOS had governed like the left with feckless, profligate big spending, and prosecuted a pointless war against the wrong bad Islamics! The Messiah knows that if the Left can make voters of ILLEGALS, the permanent hegemony of the Left is assured.

Keep the pressure on ALL politicians at ALL levels of government to insist that our laws be enforced. You can reach all members of Congress free and easily right here-- rattle their cages! Tell them that you support the SAVE Act calling for better enforcement, and oppose any steps to scamnesty.

Rock.
I like the analogy of Michelangelo's rock. The conservative truths already exist, the values are built into our nation, they simply need to be brought forth and polished. I also like the idea of introducing the Libertarian or Independent party into the mix and letting them influence our country and provide new options, but in this fiercely two-party system, will they ever have a chance to compete with the illuminati and the conservatives?

Taking back our nation
We have to start taking a hard right and getting back to our roots. We are the partyor reform. If we start taking our stance of government reform and actually doing the work, we can start taking back our core values. Restore America, individual freedoms, smaller government, lower taxes... these are all teh things that america wants. a majority wants to work, not get a handout.

The Country is no longer center-right
Republican core values as exhibited in reality:
Borrow and Spend
Reckless pre-emptive war
Gay Bashing
Fear mongering
Low taxes for the upper 2%
Rapture politics
Enviormental degradation, no chance from fossil fuels
Glorify ignorance
Keep pushing your core values, we have moved on,
the end is near, pray for the Rapture.

WHAT "core beliefs"?
The GOP keeps feeding us RINOs and telling us to hold our noses while we go down in flames. The REAL core beliefs to put stock in are the ideas of Reagan era CONSERVATISM!! Remember the elite blue bloods spent almost as much time and energy trying to topple Reagan as did the libtards.

Janice Post #10
You've got to read post number 10 by Janice.

No, there's nothing profound in her thinking. There's no witty analysis of the article by Mr. Blackwell. There is, in fact, nothing of any worth in her post. It's just typical name calling by a Democrat.

What is interesting though, is how horribly written is her post. Senseless run on sentences, improper or no punctuation and sentences that change subject in mid-stream.

I rolled on the floor howling with laughter when Janice wrote: "Sarah Palin is a serious abortion of the Education system ..."

Janice is without a doubt, a product of the government education system and a perfect example of what happens when you dumb down the high school graduation requirements. Janice is also a pretty convincing argument in favor of abortion.

Janice, please keep posting your simpleminded thoughts on TH (that's Town Hall, Janice). You have the gift of stupidity that is the hallmark of the Obama voter.

Hoover and taxes?
Didn't Hoover sign a massive (for its day) tax hike JUST AS THE ECONOMY WAS HEADED FOR THE DUMPER? Of course Roosevelt the Lesser (FDR) just HAD to jack up the top marginal rate to 90%. Libtards like him can't help themselves. It's like that clown this week in D.C. who said "You never waste a crisis, it's too good an opportunity."

In other words, while people are pi$$ing in their pants they'll let you screw up even more.

The republican party
In the republican party, the conservatives are the majority group, and the rinos are, by in large, the minority. That's a fact. We, the majority, have relinquished our dominant ideas to the minority. Then, we complain when we loose the elections. We blame each other for our the mistakes that we made. That's stupid. The majority, us, have a better argument than the rinos, or for that fact, the liberals, yet we have too few people to make the arguments for us. We let rinos and liberals decide what the rules of the game is to be, then we have to choose the less evil of the two will be. Look people, we will never win anything voting against something. We can only win voting for something. So, as the majority in the republican party, we should be the ones making the rules on how we are to win any election. The rinos do not have any loyalties to our party, all they are after is power to make the rules, and they must never again have that kind of power in our party. I would venture to guess that most of the rinos in our party voted for St Barack. We have 57 millions or 48% of the votes in this election. Let us build on that. But we must remember, who the rinos were that lost our election for us. All we really need is to convince another 5% to 8% of the electorate to vote on our side in the 2010 elections, to win back our government. Let's get off our a$$, quit blaming each other and go to work.

God Bless and Protect - American Warrior
The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people because they live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

The American Warrior is a constant reminder that there are terrorists in the land and those that wish to destroy America are already here on American soil.

The American Warrior on September 11, 2001, rushed towards the danger instead of fleeing from it, intent on defending and helping those American citizens in danger. Many American Warriors gave their lives that day and many more were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for America and its citizens.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men." - Edmund Burke

This Thanksgiving, I salute the American Warrior, both living and dead. Men and women who serve in the Armed Forces, Police Forces, Fire Departments and ordinary civilians who rush forward to our defense instead of running from danger.

The American Warrior - God Bless and Protect You!

Ken, sorry, but Hoover DID cause
the great depression. He took what would have been a large market correction and a minor recession and turned it into a depression by:
- bailing out selected companies
- increased government spending in general
- raising income tax rates
- massively increasing tariffs
- other government interventions in the markets.

And as you say, FDR extended it with more of the same.

So you can trust I will never vote Democratic OR LIBERAL REPUBLICAN ever again.

Intrigued by the headline....
...I searched the article for the 'core values of the GOP'. I found these:

1. Domestic energy development, 2. low taxes, 2. choice in retirement planning and 3. children's education, 4. marriage between a man and woman, 5. restrictions on abortion, 6. protecting common religious expression, and 7. Second Amendment freedoms.

Most of these are core values of the Democrats as well.. Certainly 1, 2, & 3 are Democrat values. Number 4, as well, in light of the vote on Proposition 8 in very blue California.

Less so, numbers 5, 6, & 7. Democrats as well as Republicans dislike (even hate) abortions but disagree on whether there should be increased legal restrictions vs. women remaining free to make their own decisions on the matter. Dems and Repubs don’t disagree that much about religious expression either, except that Dems prefer that everyone keep their religion to themselves, which evangelical Christian conservatives, in particular, are disinclined to do.

Second Amendment freedoms reflect the true schism between the left and the right. A close look at Blue and Red areas of the country reveals that densely populated areas (e.g. NYC, SFO, CHI, etc.) are blue and sparsely populated areas (Alaska, Texas, the vast Midwest, etc.) are red. The former are concerned with urban violence and the latter are concerned with self sufficiency and self protection, both of which depend, at least psychologically, on gun ownership. Dense urban areas fear gun proliferation because of the danger of 'critical mass'. Sparsely populated, rural, small towns and villages simply don't have those fears. They don't worry much about being run over in heavy traffic for the same reasons.

Bottom line: Heterogeneous, dense, diverse, big cities are blue (i.e. Democrats), whereas, homogeneous, rural, small towns are red (i.e. Republican). Best example: Nevada. Only Vegas is blue, all else is red.

zapdoodat

Actually educated people know Harding, Cooledge, and Hoover had nothing to do with causing the great depression.

We do know FDR had a lot to do with prolonging the Great Depression to 11 years.

So I trust you will never vote Democratic again.

koolmuse said "the GOP has been reducing
taxes on the extremely wealthy since the 1950s."

[buzzer sounds] wrong.

Eisenhower (R) left the top marginal rate at the same 91% it was when he took office.

JFK (D) lowered it to 77% for 1963 and to 70% for 1964.

LBJ (D), Nixon (R) and Carter (D) left it at 70%.

Reagan (R) dropped it to 50% for 1982 and by stages down to 28%.

Bush (R) raised taxes again, and lost his re-election bid largely because of it.

All of this, of course, supports my argument at the beginning of this thread that the GOP IS NOT a limited government party - Reagan just took it over and made it one during his tenure, and Gingrich did the same during the 1990s.

koolmuse, you might do a little research about how popular Reagan was, and the landslide victories he acheived with his limited-government ideals.

The GOP's Un-Biblical Anti-Israel Agenda
Christians recognize the biblical mandate to support Israel. What did the GOP do to support Israel??? THEY HAVE DIVIDED THE LAND OF ISRAEL SINCE 1991, OPENLY DISOBEYING A STERN WARNING OF ALMIGHTY GOD AGAINST SUCH IDIOTIC BEHAVIOR!
Then they have the audacity and incomprehensible Biblical ignorance to wonder why such horrible things as Katrina, Andrew, Hugo, 911, the Northridge eqrthquake, the Midwestern floods, the Midwestern tornadoes, and the unstable economy and government are happening to America. What has the GOP ever done about getting the useless UN out of America??? NOTHING! Like Kumbaya Liberals in DC, they support the UN and cared not one iota about letting Hugo Chavez and Ahmadinejad embarrass our nation on American soil. What has the GOP done about prosecuting blatant TREASON at the New York Times? NOTHING! What has the GOP done or said about the murder of Christian missionaries in Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia??? NOTHING!

Beliefs Require Actions
What did the GOP do about Jamie Gorelick's infamous Wall between the Justice Department and the CIA and FBI that led to obstruction of justice, subpoena denials, and ultimately 911 or Bill Clinton's patently illegal China Scandal??? NOTHING! What did the GOP do about gay marriage??? THEY COULDN'T EVEN PASS LEGISLATION TO OPPOSE GAY MARRIAGE! What did the GOP do about making English our Sovereign language??? NOTHING!!! What did the GOP do about un-Constitutional judges who choose to legislate from the bench??? NOT ONE IMPEACHMENT! What did the GOP do about Pelosi's TREASONOUS act of visiting with a sworn American enemy, Syria??? NOTHING! There's nothing really Conservative at all about this party; they are merely a bunch of Corporate Socialist Wealth-transfer Representatives in Washington training for their future careers as lobbyists down the street. What did the GOP do to oppose the Fairness Doctrine? THE GOP SUPPORTED THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE; Trent Lott threatened to pull the plug on talk radio! With friends like that in DC, who needs enemies???

But Do They Walk the Walk???
Today's GOP is not following the US Constitution or free-market principles of Capitalism. Hypocrisy will get you absolutely nowhere. 1994 brought the Contract With America; the GOP talked the talk and made all sorts of promises to the American People. CHANGE was in the air. Within 2 years, they revealed that they never intended to walk the walk of Conservatism one iota. Did they address the systematic brainwashing of America's children and young adults in the public schools and universities??? Sure, by giving more of our taxpayer money to these PC indoctrination and babysitting centers to support the opposition party?!?! DOES NOT COMPUTE!!! What did the GOP, the Grand Ole Pathological Liars, do about the Fair Tax, the Simple tax, or repealing the 16th Amendment??? NOT A DAMN THING! What did the GOP do about repealing Roe vs. Wade or curtailing Abortion??? NOT A DAMN THING, except partial-birth Abortion legislation! How did they limit government spending? BY EXPANDING THE INDIVIDUAL WELFARE STATE AND THE CORPORATE WELFARE STATE TO UNPRECEDENTED PROPORTIONS! How much of the Contract With America was ever fulfilled??? ZILCH, ZERO, NADA!!! Did the GOP listen to, a.k.a. "represent", the overwhelming number of American People who vehemently opposed bailouts??? NO! Did they care that 80% of us vehemently opposed Illegal Immigration? NO! Did the GOP follow the Constitutional mandate to "avoid foreign entanglements"? NOPE! Did the GOP keep its promise to avoid the un-Constitutional practice of nation building? NO! Today's GOP is a joke! DC is a welfare state jobs bank for lawyers and Liberals, ad nauseum. It is a Socialist cesspool of college-brainwashed, Ivy League political nuts, Corporate lobbyists, and think-tankers, most of whom have never worked a day in their lives, and neither party is an exception to the rule.

DDL From MI

China's 10% ownership of the U.S. debt has more to do with Bill Clinton's Free Trade Agreement with China then anything the GOP did.

So if you object to China's ownership of U.S. Debt, you must really obeject to Bill Clinton.

To do otherwise would indicate a lack of intellectual intergrity.

GOP has core beliefs?

Conservatives have core beliefs. GOP does not.

It's Too Bad
That screaming liberals and anti-God people such as koolmuse and DDL feel they have to come here to post their nonsense and gobbldeegook. One has to wonder why they come to places such as this, where there is nothing they're going to read that they will agree with or that will brighten their day. I have no desire to spend time at the Daily Kos and other leftist nut-bar sites. Why must these people come here to spew their garbage? Perverse pleasure, I guess.

If they could see what fools they make of themselves, perhaps there would be some hope for change in their hearts and lives. The hatred and venom that spews from their minds never ceases to astound me.

How utterly foolish they are. No clue.

Rattle on, koolmuse, DDL, and those that think like you do. Because those of us that have experienced and KNOW GOD, are way, way ahead of you.

You see Boys (I guess you're boys), there's a certain strength that comes from knowing we're right. And it's something you'll never understand. Not unless you come to the point of being willing to open your poor little minds.

DDL #59
Please explain what you mean by "most"? I love how some people loudly proclaim Bush as a bad president, but can't name SPECIFIC things to bolster their claim.

Here are mine:

- He signed the prescription medicine bill
- He expanded the size/scope of the Dept of Ed.
- He promoted amnesty for illegals

That's about it. However, Bush also:

- gave us Alito and Roberts, ensuring 4 solid constiutionalists on the SCOTUS and, with Kennedy, a majority on most issues.
- signed in those tax cuts that undergirded 8 years of robust economic growth.
- kept us safe from another domestic terrorist attack (7 yrs now since 9/11). There were several known attacks thwarted and many more that we'll never get to know about.
- restored dignity to the Oval Office after 8 years of embarrassing Clinton scandals.

I leave out the Iraq War because it's a good thing or a bad thing depending on your view. War is never "a good thing" because of the loss of life and possession, but sometimes it is "the best thing possible" at the time.

In the end I think President Bush has been a very good, but not great, president with whom I've had a few sharp disagreements. I only hope I can say the same thing about Barack Obama four years from now.

GOP Strength Rests in Its Core Beliefs
"The plain truth is that some of the things that President Bush and the Republican majority did gave conservatives a bad name, and so the GOP lost the voters' trust."

Some?

LOL!!

How about most?

The GOP has nearly succeeded in ruining this country, and China now owns 10% of our national debt. Foreign Asian nations now have a controlling interest in the US economy because of the GOP worship of unfettered monopolistic global corporate capitalism.

Go ahead and pray, Christian fundamentalist fanatics, as if it will prevent your children from needing to learn to speak Mandarin.

band together
the fact that everyone has different reasons for the fail this year is where some of the blame lies. The leftist illuminati did a better job of unifying this year. That should be a focus

To: Koolmuse #50
If I've got you right, you said, "Republican principles of limited government, economic opportunity and personal responsibility" enjoy "about 15% popularity".

If this is so, why did nearly 50% of the country vote for the Republican candidate?

You also said, "You lost because you are the party of pseudo-Christian anal-retentive busy-body gossipy touch-holes. Guns, gays and God.
The 'thou shalt not' cult."

While I appreciate your ever-so-constructive criticism of my party and am sure it was given with a sincere desire to help us improve our electoral success in the next election, you might want to cut back on the name-calling. 'Anal-rententive' isn't something you should call anybody. I disagree with liberals like you on a host of subjects, but I never call you names.

The GOP is finished forever.

Republican politicians
are trying for the left wing vote. They are clueless about what people want.

Take a look at '94; Republicans did not plan for that victory. The public's reaction to the Democratic Party screw ups in '94 blind sided the Republican Party. Knocked them stupid.

The Republican Party has yet to wake up as to where the votes are and what the issues really are. (Just take a look at what was addressed in the campaigns, and what the exit polling revealed were actual concerns the voters had.)

To: zapdoodat #49
Your history is more than a little faulty. Here's some truth to chew on:

Up until 1929, the President and the Congress had never attempted to control the US economy. The federal gov't had no authority to do so. There was no Dept of Transportation, Energy, HHS or HUD back then. Economic prosperity came from our free market system and its business cycles.

During the 1920's we enjoyed a longer and larger than normal upside to a business cycle, which was called the Roaring 20's. By 1929, this cycle was ending. The President at the time (Hoover), decided to try something new. Government intervention would be used to prolong the business cycle upside, perhaps avoiding the downside altogether.

This attempt at economic control by the gov't turned what would have been a normal mild recession into a depression. The next President (Roosevelt) could have been an American hero by abandoning Hoover's ideas. Instead, he amplified and extended them, turning a depression into The Great Depression.

Please get your facts straight. Republican presidents did not cause the Great Depression. Hoover pushed us to the edge and FDR pushed us over.

2010 IS COMING SOON
THE ECONOMY WILL OCCUPY ALOT OF THE DEMOCRTATS TIME AND TAKE UP MOST OF THEIR ENERGY. ENJOY THIS THANKSGIVING DAY BUT REMEMBER IN TWO YEARS YOUR PARTY WILL BE LEAVING WASHINGTON IN NUMBERS NOT SEEN SINCE THE CONTRACT WITH AMERICA.

Happy Thanksgiving, President Bush
Dear President Bush: I want to thank you for some thing you did that is quite great but the media has diminished a revealing story. It's because of your efforts that we can blog and celebrate with family this holiday season. You and the Justice Department knew that WMDs were hidden and they were located on a Iranian ship headed for the port of Israel recently, but was stopped before killing thousands of people. A small news article stated that because of your efforts and the efforts of the Justice Department, the Holy Land Foundation has been exposed as an anti-American terrorist group and the defendants have been found guilty involving millions of dollars that involved money laundering for terrorists groups under the guise of humanitarian efforts because our Justice Department worked diligently to save the lives of thousands of people who could have been injured and killed if not stopped; and although, it's very expensive to fight terrorism for the taxpayers which keeps the blood shed off of our soil that was spilled on 911, I am grateful this Thanksgiving that our country's efforts under your watch proved to be true and successful, but sad that it's not all over the main stream media news on Thanksgiving Day, but know that many know of your efforts to save our country from a terrible attack or takeover by radical anti-American militant groups under the guise of religion.

Ken
It only took three terms of consecutive Republican presidents (Warren G. Harding;1920, Calvin Coolidge; 1924, Herbert Hoover;1928) to drive my beloved and proud country to its knees more than 70 years ago, resulting in the Great Depression.

When will you learn that the country needs to be run by competent people?

Anyhow, it only took one Republican president, in two terms, to drive this mighty of mighty countries to the brink of financial oblivion.
George Bush is the master of 'cut taxes and spend even more' that has successfully hollowed out our economy.

Let's remember, it's not about spreading the wealth, or creating wealth, but it is about the DESTRUCTION of wealth, Republican-style.

I hope you are proud of yourself and will NEVER vote Republican again.

to Gestell on courage of convictions:
Gestell writes that conservatives should "refuse to accept Social Security checks, say no to Medicare, ... say no to the FDIC and its protection when their savings accounts vaporize..."

We are forced to pay into those particular federal benefits. Accepting Soc-Sec, Medicare and FDIC protection amounts to getting our own money back. I'd gladly opt out of all three (let the government keep any money I've already paid in - but don't take any more, and I won't ask for any benefits).

As to the other items you list, many are impossible and/or illegal to do. Selling food not unappropved by the FDA, for example, gets farmers into trouble - and it's completely unavailable in grocery stores.

I agree with you that in order to be consistent, conservatives should not accept hand-outs from the government.

Mr Blackwell said,
"the GOP strength was in their core beliefs in limited government, economic opportunity and personal responsibility"

Going back to Eisenhower, how many times did the GOP fight to shrink the size of government? I cannot think of anything. A problem is always easier to fix the sooner you begin following the creation of the problem. The GOP let Democrats grow the government but never once did the GOP take back any of the ground they ceded to the Dems.

The GOP talks a lot about economic opportunity but what have they done to change the government programs that continue to grow, like a leach, on economic opportunity? GOP did adjust welfare but did they drive a nail in its coffin to prevent future Democrats from growing it? No. Economic opportunity is tied directly to taxes and our GOP guys want tax money as badly as do the Dems.

It seems to me that the GOP does not understand that the best weapon they have is the Constitution. Instead of fighting with the Dems about being 'greedy Republicans' the GOP could have made the Dems argue against the wisdom of our founding Fathers. But that would mean the GOP would have to want to preserve the Constitution and therein lies the problem. Like the Dems the GOP does not want to be shackled by the Constitution. Our country will continue to collapse until leaders step forward who want to return our country to being governed by the Constitution. Merely talking about conservative ideas and other clap trap will not raise the GOP, or any other party, to the heights of power needed to influence National policy.

Re: The real TRUTH of the matter
Before America decides to brow beat its citizens with the Bible, how about stripping the parasitic tyrannical powers of government to social engineer the population and return this economy back to a free market model. Christianity is not going to fund this country and get it back on its feet. I believe this country needs to return back to the days of the Federalist or Libertarians by today’s definition.

Republican = Conservative?
The biggest problem is that Republicans don't really represent conservatives. Here is a more detailed account of my thoughts.

http://inyourrightmind.blogtownhall.com/2008/11/14/republic an_rehab.thtml

The real TRUTH of the matter....
Ken says:"In 1994, the party refocused and found its way back. It will do so again."
Common sense says: The conservative party will find it's way back only if it puts God first and convinces the masses to abandon the Godlessness that has permeated our whole culture! We have to stop killing or murdering the most innocent and defenseless (the unborn babies)of our society. We have to recognize active homosexuality for what it is: a mortally, deadly sinful lifestyle; and any immoral sexual activity that is condemned by God. We cannot give in to this gross immorality ( or immorality of any sort)and expect God to bless us, either individually or as a nation.
United States take heed of
(Romans 1:18-32). Ken,that is the only way we have a chance.

reply to Upland William
Very, very few conservativs have the courage of their convictions. If they reject big government, intellectual honesty and a minimum of moral integrity should also motivate them not to accept the benefits they derive from big government. So, let's see those conservatives refuse to accept Social Security checks, say no to Medicare, use medicines that have not been approved by the FDA, eat meat that has not been inspected, ignore the lists of ingredients on food packaging, give up any protections that consumer protection laws give them, say no to the FDIC and its protection when their savings accounts vaporize, refuse to buy the many, many products that exist because of government-funded research, and turn down those federal student loans their kids used to be able to get for college.

Nah. Not going to happen. There are words to describe conservatives on such matters. "Hypocrites" and "ingrates" are two of those words. Others may be found.

Donald captured the "core belief" of...
the GOP today
"Look for Obama to screw up quite a bit -- jump on these opportunities to criticize him and the Democrats."

Yep. That's about it.

America
America needs Christian principles. wayne

Save America
Blackwell is right, we have to look forward.
We need to be Pro Christian -God vs. Antichrist,Pro Family- marriage vs. perversion, Pro health, Pro work vs. welfare,--. We can win and Revive America.
Republicans basically beat themselves in the last election with the wrong tax plan and health plan. There is an wrong element of greed and private answers under the elite and rich; when the government under God and WE THE PEOPLE must take control. Pray, wayne

More specifics, please
Mr. Blackwell is needlessly vague on what the Republicans need to regain power. He is too conciliatory. Conservatism is the core of the Republican party, and conservatives should position themselves as far to the right as possible, because that's where their strongest supporters are. Most Th readers, if their many comments are any indication, are much further to the right than many Republican politicians. The Republican politicians need to move closer to the voters. This means hard right positions against gay marriage, against tolerance for gays, in favor of maintaining the values of biblical Christianity as defined by evangelicals, and much more. Republicans need to be on the frontlines supporting the war, undermining Democratic politicians, starting with Obama, digging up the sins of liberals (or inventing the evidence as needed)to discredit them. Conservative Republicans should recognize that they own the truth about God and man, in all things. They need to understand that their mission is to move the rest of the country to the far right and maintain political dominance indefinitely.

Are we sure about that?
Blackwell writes:"America is a center-right country, both economically and socially."

I'm aware that citizens regularly tell pollsters that they approve of ideas/actions that fall into the category of "center right". However, when these same citizens are asked which federal goodies they are personally willing to surrender, their answers seem to demonstrate that most prefer the status quo of federal involvement in the minute details of their lives so that they may continue to get their favourite federal goodie, whether it's the mortgage tax break or a federal subsidy for their local art club.

That seems to be a textbook illustration of cognative dissonance - holding two or more mutually exclusive opinions at the same time. No wonder we keep electing people who haven't a clue what the country is all about (see Kathleen Parker's column for today.)

Susan, I disagree with your solution
to dealing with the media. In 1980 and 1984 Reagan ran on a limited-government conservative platform and destroyed his opponents, despite a media that was completely in the tank for the Democrats. There was no alternative media and no internet at the time.

With a great communicator who believes in limited government we will win despite the leftist media.

Very well stated. We really have a one party system for sure. Liberal and liberal light.

Trolls like Unkoolmuse, Hal Donahue, Don Juan, Left Angle, Secular sword et al coming here want to beat their chests because they beat a liberal GOP candidate that we couldn't stand, to replace a president that most of us are deeply troubled with and that has not governed as a conservative. They say ridiculous crap like conservatism is dead when only Goldwater and Reagan have ever even given it more than lip service. Now they have their Messiah who promises the real Bush 3rd term only with even more spending. What change!

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE…?
Yes, the next four years will be a long troubling and for many agonizing four years to be sure. Why is it, that politicians' of all flavors seem to have trouble doing what is right? They seem to always choose the “wrong”, even when “right” is staring them in the face.

“We the People” must put a STOP to this madness and develop the trust in our Democracy; to that end:

1. STOP…Congress from serving more than two terms. Presidents are only allowed two terms why should Congress be any different.
2. STOP…Congress from voting for their own pay & benefits.
3. STOP…Paying for Congress’ high-priced insurance and other benefits.
4. STOP…Paying Congress’ full salary after serving just one term, or at retirement.
5. STOP…Congress from receiving life-time benefits; make them pay into Social Security like everyone else.
6. STOP…Congress from ignoring the will of the majority, for that of the special interests.
7. STOP…Giving out aid to illegal aliens.
8. STOP…Anyone from entering this country illegally.
9. STOP…Allowing babies born to illegal aliens in the USA automatic US Citizenship.
10. STOP…The abuses of the welfare system.
11. STOP…Fraud and identity theft. Cross check Social Security Numbers with finger-prints and use it for voter registration.
12. STOP…The “Bailing-Out” of banks and mortgage companies that gave loans to people who could not afford them. Or to any company that has made bad business decisions, especially the Auto Industry.
13. STOP…Companies from giving CEOs and other executives outrageous salaries, bonuses and golden parachutes while the company goes “belly-up”, taking its workers pensions with it.
14. STOP…All unnecessary spending, especially “ear-marks”.
15. STOP…Permitting anyone from having a driver’s license with their face covered.

I could come up with some more, but you get the idea. These are common sense items that a free people should have demand long ago.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE…?

Janice
Before you criticize Gov Jindal's path to office you might want to look at President-Elect Obama's.

At least Gov Jindal has governed and done something.

GOP Core Beliefs ...
... can be found here:

http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/

It's not that these Core Principles are out-of-step, it is that too many in the Party are willing to abandon these principles in the name of some unproven theory about how voters would respond. Those pundits said, "Move to the center and you will gain votes!" which is exactly what John McCain and the GOP did and got spanked as a result.

The Core Principles of the GOP are winning issues. The point of this article is that we need to get back to those beliefs and rebuild from there.

Another RINO Motivation Puff Piece
As I view the big government political parties, there is only a gray shade of difference between the Republican and Democratic political parties. Both want to social engineer to their party line morality and both believe in re-distribution of wealth. The only difference is the Republicans stay two steps to the right of Democrats just to state: ‘Hey we are more conservative than those other guys’. All you people have done is squander many years and billions of our taxpayer money turning food into ethanol.

If you want to actually bring optimism, stop being a RINO and stand up as a principled Conservative.

Dave Kooker

Let's Agree on Values
We Conservatives have core values (and it is difficult to determine if liberal/socialist have any at all) that we will not abandon and should not compromise. How do you compromise with someone who does not adhear to a work ethic, who expects others to take care of their every needs, and flees from all personal accountability. At the same time, they excuse those criminals who happen to be of their same ethnicity, want to bring others down to their level rather than raise themselves up, and make no meaningful contributions to a civil society. How do you meet these people half way down the road? YOU DON'T!

Our efforts must be to get a larger portion of them to believe in our values and join us.

OK, but ...
I worry a bit about someone who touts the GOP as the party of Lincoln and T. Roosevelt. Roosevelt, for example, was a Progressive (which, inter alia, both Clintons claim to be). His vision was to expand the state and redistribute wealth, and was at odds with the founders' natural rights principles and a constitutionally limited government. Remember that he said "We grudge no man a fortune in civil life ...BUT ..." He then sought to undermine property rights so that the state could acheive its destiny. Individual rights were subservient to collective rights, to "solve" social ills.
Enough historians have lectured us about the mixed history of Lincoln. I agree with those above who believe we need to be the party of Reagan, or an even more circumspect party of limited government.
I would hope to be led in that pursuit by someone who had an appreciation for history. Based on the article, I am not convinced that Blackwell does.

GOP Core Beliefs
The GOP need only focus on the three core principles of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. All the discourse I've read over the last several days regarding this subject only addresses the failures and offers no real path forward.

REPUBLICANS DIDN'T LOSE...
The media won. How can the Republicans offset the deluge of propaganda with which the media drowned the airwaves. Made no mention of any of the questionable relationships Obama's had with Ayers, Wright, Farakhan...Where's his birth certificate, etc. The media covered up every flaw, asked no hard questions about how he would govern this country. Allowed him to give vague answers about hope and change. Oh, and did I mention the immense amount of free advertising he received in 'news coverage'? The conservatives need to band together and buy one of the worst cable news stations (MSNBC would be a good start) and turn them centrist and objective in their coverage. The liberals have taken control of the airwaves. The Fairness Doctrine is not far behind. The media bought and paid for this president.

Corruption of principle
I agree with Sam in Georgia.

Want me back?

Restore the Constitution as the true law of the land. We are a Republic NOT a democracy.

Reject the evil philosophy of "pre emptive war", especially when no one declares one (that Constitution thing again).

Repudiate Socialism yourselves before painting others with that brush, INCLUDING privatising Social(ist) Security, eliminating Medicare, abolishing the Federal Reserve (in fact ALL central banking and its Gestapo the IRS. Want Socialism? Move to France.

Enshrine Liberty above all else, including "security".

Until then, I am with the Libertarian and Constitution Party and will work for the DESTRUCTION of the Republicrats.

Who Do You Like More?
The gift giver or the one who criticizes the gift giver?

Republicans offered no real choice
It was expand the government or expand the government faster. Voters saw the Republican party doing a spectacular job of failing at "do it for you" government, so they just went back with what they percieved as the only alternative, Democrats. Give voters a real distinction, not just Democrats-lite.

Ummm-hmmm, I like the way...
this guy thinks.

Republicans- Conservative????
I think not!! The republicans of today are the
democrats of yesteryear, and teh Democrats of today are the Socialists and Communists of yesteryear. The republicans need to get back to principles of Washington, Adams Jefferson, and the rest of the founding Fathers.

Core Beliefs
Mr. Blackwell is correct. We HAVE to stay with our core beliefs. They are best. If the Hispanics want to come to us,they must believe as we do. Same with any minority.

We do not need to reach out. They do. If we must compromise our principles,it won't happen. There are some things less important than others, but the basics are set in stone.

We cannot depend on the media. They are totally corrupted. They are lap dogs for the left, because they are the left.

We must start a grassroots campaign NOW and give conservatives something to fight for and SOMEONE to lead. The rest will follow.

Susan
You are correct. A lot of conservatives are unfailingly polite when dealing with political issues. Too often, when attacked, we don't respond appropriately - see President Bush.

Yes there are some on our side who throw caution to the wind and act like democrats using ad hominem attacks, but most of our brethren would prefer not to return fire for fire.

The way the argument comes across to me is that conservatives see liberals as generally decent people, though woefully misguided and ignorant. Liberals see conservatives as an evil that must be destroyed. Until the conservatives realize that to democrats politics is a blood sport, we will not be as successful as we could be.

We know that the liberals will do anything and everything, legal or illegal, to win in the arena of politics. Note - Florida 2000, Acorn, NJ Senate race. We must be better prepared to deal with ALL possibilities, not just the legal ones.

Regards

Here's what we're up against:

http://www.howobamagotelected.com/

How can you counter this?

I'm ashamed for America

Who we are
Republicans have allowed themselves to be bullied. We have allowed ourselves to be painted as bigots because we are cowed when liberals attack. We need to proud of our concepts of individualism and that we are compassionate by helping individuals before free of government control.

If I had to guess about our mascot Ranger, I would say his age would be about 17 - 19. Late high school, early college. Pretty good with researching the web for information, occasionally on point with his comments, but mostly here for the attention.

I do notice that the threads are much better when nobody responds to his posts.

Regards

Wanger Wobbie29
is a dimwit college squirt who is too dumb to know he has been fed a load of rubbish by his liberal college profs.

In twenty years he will discover the Republican-Conservative message when he has want of head, instead of now which is want of heart.

Until then we thank him for his support of the Republican Party! Because if the Obama "bottom up" theory can work in relation to message of the libs, and Ranger, Hal Donahos, ChristianLibz, MariodaBakerz in FL, can filter up to the Dem leaders, they hasten our Republican vicotry in the 2010 midterms!

Janice, learn to write a coherent
paragraph and use punctuation properly before you accuse other people of being "a serious abortion of the education system".

You'd be taken much more seriously.

On the substance:

- why the criticism of Palin's education but not Biden's? The media were out to trip Palin up, and she stumbled once or twice. Biden fell flat on his face despite helping hands.

- Jindal is ambitious and has moved from job up to job as those in higher offices failed and/or resigned. Why is that a moral judgment on him?

- you've criticized the two governors with the highest approval ratings in the country. Maybe you're missing something.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/fav orables/governors_approval_ratings

Conservative Principles, not Republican
All you need to understand there is a difference between being conservative and being Republican -- the two are not necessarily synonomous. That brings me to a point -- James in SC, you complain about "Republicans" from SC that are not conservative; don't blame me -- I didn't vote for Lindsey Graham you all did! Why don't you vote him out in the next primary? I plan on contributing to the Libertarian candidate if there is one next time.

Ranger29 -- go home to Moveon dot org where you will find a home for your incoherent diatribe, you facist socialist.

Janice -- where were you educated? Your post really hurt to read. That said, where have you been? You complain Jindal has been gov less than a year before sending a team to Iowa. Heck, Lord Barrock Obama sent a team to Iowa on the DAY he was inaugerated into the Senate! And, I trust Jindal's display of leadership more than I trust Obama's. Voting present as much as he has is a sign of weak leadership. I also trust Palin -- she GOT a college education, did you? I seriously doubt it.

Let's focus on one thing
and one thing only: the Dem controlled Congress at its 9% approval rating.

Let's send Reid into retirement like we did that flake Daschle in SD.

Let's get our candidates in districts on the Conservative message, and make the Dems own this bailout mania and the reasons why it was even necessary to begin with..

Let's get Newt in the chair at RNC to teach them how to do it. He knows how to accomplish it.

Ranger 29
Is a liberal who is on every townhall site. He is there with his hate and brain washed dogma. keep practicing your salute you are going to need it, Rangy

If it is not conservative...
Personally the party does not know what conservativism is.

Why should I give them the time of day. They say conservative and offer me isle striding McCain and throw in Palin for looks. She does look good, pund intended.

It will be tough for me to vote Republican next time without a very, very limited government or constitutional one. I will be in many neighbors education constituents the difference.

Go Home Sarah Palin
If the republican Party intends to recapture the spotlight Sarah Palin and ambition Bobby Jindal who by the way is a first generation India immigrant with policies that favor the rich, very rich, NEWSFLASH, they are not the go to people. Sarah Palin is a serious abortion of the Education system and it is evident with her family life and her scouting colleges for 6 yrs to find professors that will move her to the graduation line. We all have seen this type chick. Bobby well bobby never stay in a job long...he has not been Govenor a year and already he is in Iowa setting the platform for a 2012 run. Family Values my foot Louisiana could stand a talk on that topic with the incest that is occuring with a group in the state of louisiana. The guy is abitious check out his resume he never stayed in a state job more than 2 years and he already is RICH! Goverment gold or Goverment Cheese? No books deals in his past either and family all on state payroll. Evangelical, Conservatives, whatever you call yourselves take a look and see what the others saw and you will understand why the Republican Party was fired!

The GOP didn't get the memo
Just in case it slipped the author's notice the congress is boldly and innovatively sticking with the same minority leaders.

NumbersUSA is reporting that Harry Reid has confirmed that Obama and McCain have cut a deal to pass amnesty in the spring. Big surprise.

That little move should just about do it for the GOP.

Move right
The further right the country moves the better quality of life it will have. It also means more immigrates come here and 80% will be democats looking for free handouts and affirmative action type programs.

We need to shut down the borders and selectively decide who gets in this country. If we don't we end up with a low-quality-of- life socialist country and an overpopulated one.

Republicans need a real leader like Ronald Reagan. Nominating McCain was a big mistake. A center left candidate who praises his nutcase opponent while criticizing his own party is a recipe for disaster. McCain had a gift of tons of negative baggage with Obama and never used it. We don't need weak candidates like McCain who are out of the mainstream of the party.

Over 80% of the population pays little attention to politics. Republicans need to have strong conservative vaulues and it is their job to sell these values to the American people. The libs and the lamestream media joined to sell Obama who is the most inept candidate ever and his baggage would have sunk any white candidate. With a liberal media, white guilt, and black racism, Obama was sold.

The key is to go directly at Obama without hesitation. Anyone as inept as Obama can be taken down. Obama does not know what to do since he does not know anything. Obama will do what his hundreds of advisors tell him to do.

Look for Obama to screw up quite a bit -- jump on these opportunities to criticize him and the Democrats.

The problem with Republicans is
they have demonstrated that most of them are not conservative. I live is SC and we have 2 senators both (R) and 6 representative 2 (D) and 4 (R). Of our elected officials and the federal level only one of them is a true conservative. Sen DeMint voted against the "bailout" both times. He believes that the GOP must remain true to its conservative values and priciples. Unfortunately the Republican Party is no longer the party of conservatives. I see too many of them stepping away from conservative ideals and moving to the left of center. I believe the answer for conservative Republicans is to move to the Constitution Party. You can't go wrong when you follow the constitution because it was written for all Citizens of the United States. Take a look at http://www.constitutionparty.com

TruthHurts?
I think you have it all wrong w/ Mr. Blackwells' exclusion of blacks as a demographic the GOP can get. You see, the democrat party has been systematically destroying the black population of America for over 40 years, and yet they continue to blindly flock to their own slaughter like sheep rushing down the shute.

He didn't say it but, it seems obvious to me that, all the GOP can do is get back to its traditional conservative American roots and hope that American blacks will follow suit to THEIR same roots. Reagan educated a lot of people to the truth, but even he couldn't reverse the irrational, self-destructive behaviour that has become common place in black America today.

The Next President of the RNC!!
Now THIS is surreal: "Hispanics, working women and Reagan Democrats can all be persuaded to vote for the GOP. Republicans must have solutions that reach these voters where they are."......Let's examine these 2 sentences from Blackwell's column. OK what's missing??..Think hard??..It's Black people!!...You see, there may be others who would aspire to be the head of the RNC. Yes, they may be uh, uniquely qualified, just like Ken...What's the difference?..Blackwell's not even PRETENDING that he'll offer any message that would expand the base to the people he would be assumed to be attractive to...Ken talks about reaching out to Hispanics (3% in Ohio) working women and Reagan Democrats (you know, the group that last voted for Reagan 30 years ago!)....You see, Ken knows that he can be the "face" of the GOP without having to actually represent or recruit "diversity"...Here's betting that Ken Blackwell will be chosen as the new RNC head...He's qualified to serve as the GOP version of "Black ops" toward the Obama administration..He'll do this without even pretending that he hopes to increase ANY actual representation among Black people for the GOP. What a country!

Look at it again:
Richard29

I got it right the first time! Sorry you did not get it.

The mind slows with age.

Richard29
Your hatred toward conservatives borders on the insane. Get some fresh air and stop spending so much time inside at the old folks home.

Blackwell's analysis of what needs to
happen is right on target, but his idea of "basic Republican principles" is way off.

He needs to substitute that with "Reagan's basic principles" - because Reagan had to wrest control of the GOP away from the followers of Roosevelt & Rockafeller who have historically dominated it.

The only limited government presidents we've had in the past 100 years (starting with Teddy) have been Coolidge and Reagan. ALL of the other GOP presidents have been big-government presidents who damaged the country by expanding the size and reach of the federal government just like the Democrats.

Blackwell should have written "Unfortunately, Republicans HAVE been true to Republican principles." The GOP must turn back to "the three legs of the Reagan Coalition". Either that, or the conservative base really needs to follow Sam's prescription - abandon the GOP for a true limited government party.

What is the GOP's core beliefs?
1) Illegal aliens
2) Perpetual Debt
3) Supporter of the Federal Reserve
4) Government Bailouts
5) Snake oil talk show hosts-Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingrham
6) Modern day feudalism
7) Banker take overs
9) Perpetual Inflation

Unfortunately the Democrats are no better.

Maybe the Constitution, Libertarian, or Independent Party might be a better alternative than the GOP.
