What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

There is one thing about Barack Obama's speech in Cairo that critics and supporters can agree on: It was vintage Obama.

As an Obama critic, let me say from the outset that there was much that was good and praiseworthy in the president's address at Al-Azhar University on Thursday. His celebration of human rights, his condemnation of violent extremism and his denunciation of the anti-Semitism that infests so much of the Middle East, including Al-Azhar University, were welcome and eloquent. This shouldn't surprise. As Obama himself likes to observe, he can give a good speech.

And that points to another reason this was vintage Obama: It was fundamentally about him. It's becoming a cliche to say that Obama is always campaigning -- running for a job he already has. But that may put the cart before the horse. Just as plausibly, Obama is simply being Obama, a man hardwired to see the world as a stage built just for him, who can charm his way out of tight spots so well, it's like he's following Yogi Berra's advice: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

That can be a great personality for a candidate, perhaps not for a president. Consider Obama's habit of casting major issues through the prism of his personal radiance. For example, he premised his big speech last month on Guantanamo on his own unique relationship with the Constitution and Declaration of Independence: "I stand here today as someone whose own life was made possible by these documents. My father came to our shores in search of the promise that they offered. My mother made me rise before dawn to learn of their truth when I lived as a child in a foreign land. My own American journey was paved by generations of citizens who gave meaning to those simple words ..."

By all means, let us settle questions of national security and the Constitution based on Obama's "American journey," as if the Founding Fathers were in-house writers for the Hallmark Channel.

In Cairo, Obama was once again standing on the shoulders of his own legend:

"I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed. That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn't. And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear." Continued...

What Have You Done For Me Lately?
June 7, 2009
Jonah: I thought it was a good speech and if Obama wants to take us all down a memory lane of his choice of ethnic persuasion I do not mind. Obama's Rasmussen results turned on him somewhat the other day. That's important because it appears that the American people are just beginning to be minutely analytical of results.I am laying back and waiting a few more months where we as country will be able to get a better handle on the the success or failure of his policies. It is going to come down to the economy, unemployment, 401K's. I do not think anybody objects to Mr. Obama's affinity for his lineage however money and healthcare and lower interest rates on credit cards will validate his presidency, not his foreign speaking engagements. This is what we call in the trade bread and butter issues. Do not waste your time worrying about his position on Israel, everybody knows in spite of this common rhetoric as we have seen recently, that America goes as Israel does and that will never change. Besides, where I live you cannot ride around on a scooter.

Ditto CAarchitect--
We certainly need a president who leads, and not a head of state who declares himself a dictator. Even Chavez of Venezuela is becoming envious of Obama, as he sees Obama taking us more left than the communist Chavez. Even, the Chi-Coms are lecturing Geitner on Deficit Spending and they laughed at him and told him to "Do the arithmetic." You cannot Fund Your Deficit by printing more money and borrowing. Look out for inflation in the numbers you read about in South America ten years ago. Somebody in the Congress better rein this Megalomaniac in. The Extravagance of Obama's spending binge is is only exceeded by Obama's Delusions of Grandeur. Obama believes like many of his illiterate and ignorant followers who I have heard say things such as, "It does not matter how much the government spends. If they run out of money, they can print more." The folks I hear saying these things are people who live off of welfare programs, and therefore have absolutely no understanding of how money is earned and have no appreciation or gratitude for what they have. They are ignorant in this way because they heard these same statements in public schools where this nonsense was being taught, and they hear Obama himself making these outrageous statements.
