Maine Democrat Flip Flops on Policies Once Again

In a time when Americans demand clarity and conviction from their elected leaders, Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) has made a career of doing the opposite. While he brands himself as an “independent voice” for Maine, his voting record tells a much different story—one of political opportunism, reversals, and hollow promises designed to win headlines, not help Mainers.

Take his stance on radical gender ideology. For years, including as recently as this January, Golden voted in support of allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports and access female-only spaces. Yet when polling showed the public wasn’t on board, Golden suddenly changed his tune, claiming “biological boys shouldn’t compete in sports against biological girls.”

The same pattern plays out on voter ID laws. In Maine’s state legislature, Golden voted multiple times against commonsense voter ID measures supported by a broad majority of Americans. But once in Congress, and conveniently after his approval ratings dived, he flipped—going so far as to accuse his own party of “using misleading fear tactics about voter suppression.” A complete about-face that looks far more like political posturing than a change of heart.

Golden has also proven unreliable when it comes to protecting Second Amendment rights. While he once campaigned as a pro-gun Democrat, in 2023 he announced his support for a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” betraying the very voters he claimed to represent in a state like Maine, where hunting and gun ownership are deeply embedded in the culture.

Border security is another glaring example. Golden has repeatedly claimed he supports securing the southern border, especially when it’s politically convenient. But just weeks ago, he voted against a package that included over $100 billion in funding for exactly that.

Even on the economy, Golden’s record tells the story of a man more loyal to the Democratic establishment than to the working families in his district. He recently voted to raise taxes on Mainers by 24 percent, a move that undercuts any claim to fiscal independence and hits everyday families right where it hurts.

Golden may claim to be an independent voice, but in reality, he’s little more than a political chameleon—changing his colors to survive, not to serve. His repeated flip-flops on everything from gender ideology and voter ID to gun rights and border security prove that his priority isn’t representing Maine, it’s protecting his own political career.
