When the Justice Department’s reputation was rightfully attacked and criticized for shoddy indictments filed against former President Donald Trump, Attorney General Merrick Garland defended his department for being awash with apolitical patriots devoted to the rule of law. These were professional stewards of the public service—we know that was a crock. These people launched a spy operation against Trump’s campaign, doctored evidence to obtain illegal FISA warrants on campaign officials, and worked for years to hamstring and jail Trump. So, please excuse me if I’m not shocked that a horde of former and current officials made a political endorsement but also totally appalled at the same time.

They did it in a letter thanking President Joe Biden for his service. Biden dropped out of the 2024 race on July 21. Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch is a signatory on the letter, which also served as an endorsement of Kamala Harris for president (via the Hill):

A group of former and current Department of Justice (DOJ) officials endorsed Vice President Harris for president, saying the “stakes could not be higher” and warning of the implications of another term for former President Trump.

Former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was joined by more than 40 DOJ officials in thanking President Biden for his years of service and his “historic decision to put the nation first and pass the torch to the next generation of leaders.”

The group said it enthusiastically endorsed Harris, like Biden, to be the next president. The letter was first obtained and reported by NBC News.

“Vice President Harris is the best choice to defeat Donald Trump and lead the nation. She has been a key partner with President Biden in rebuilding America and its standing in the world,” they wrote in a statement.

The group highlighted Harris’s accomplishments in the Senate and as California’s attorney general and said in this election, “the stakes could not be higher.”

Alas, we’re skeptical of anything from the Department of Justice under this administration. A DOJ that’s harassed pro-life supporters, visiting their homes. The same Justice Department dispatches agents to law-abiding Americans to ask them about why they’re posting anti-Biden memes. Why are FBI agents knocking on the door of a Texas nurse who is involved in a whistleblower case where a doctor alleges gender mutilation surgeries for transgender kids are being billed to the state’s Medicaid system, among other things? This current regime at the FBI interfered with the IRS, investigating the president’s son on tax evasion charges.

It's another political entity for the Democratic Party, which targets and harasses enemies of the party. It’s the Biden family’s personal police force, and they’ve acted as such. So, while the letter doesn’t shock me, it’s another example of how the Obama years might have caused irreparable damage to the institution.
