The government shutdown is over and the FISA memo war took over the news cycle, but Meghan McCain is pushing back against liberal narratives on ABC’s The View in a pretty tenacious fashion. She asked Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) if he has hurt the immigration negotiations when he confirmed to the press that President Trump asked why do we let people from “s**thole nations” into the country. This was a private White House meeting and Durbin had lied about previous ones before. In 2013, during the debt ceiling negotiations, he alleged that a GOP House leader told then-President Obama “I cannot even stand to look at you.” It never happened. Then, McCain tripped up Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) over whether Hillary Clinton’s reaction to The New York Times story that she shielded a sexual harasser on her 2008 campaign was proper.
Yet, there was one blowup between McCain and anti-Trump host Ana Navarro when the former asked why Navarro still considers herself a Republican. There was a lead up to this concerning McCain voicing that the shutdown, which lasted three days, was not Trump’s fault, noting that Democrats attached the want of a fix to the constitutionally questionable Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals program to a spending bill—which had up until recently been considered just insane. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made that point in 2013. Navarro noted that DACA provision was attached to the spending bill because it’ll be the only way to get something done on this issue. She also joined the liberal wing of the program, which is everyone but McCain, to slam the GOP for not funding the military during the shutdown. It’s a point that’s a bit overblown, as the Pentagon has contingency plans for these situations on the Hill. Yet, that’s when McCain had enough with Navarro, asking her why she considers herself a Republican. Navarro shot back saying it’s because she’s an immigrant Latina and if her parents didn’t have the resources for visas and lawyers, she would be a Dreamer as well. This occurred during the January 22 broadcast of the View (via The Federalist):
It’s playing party politics — we have another month to figure out DACA until March,” McCain said, at which point co-host Joy Behar threw her paper down on the table in frustration at the crosstalk between the two. “They’re attaching it to a spending bill.”

“I understand that DACA is a very emotional issue at this point, but most Republicans are on my side on this one, Ana,” she said. “It’s really difficult for me to understand sometimes why you still consider yourself a Republican.”
“Because I’m a Hispanic, immigrant Latina,” Navarro said. She then proceeded to tell the story of how she immigrated to the United States from Nicaragua. “I came here through no decision of my own, through no fault of my own. If my parents had not had the resources to hire lawyers, I would be a DREAM Act kid, too.”
Okay—that explains the passion from Navarro, but the fact remains that the government shutdown was the Democrats’ fault. There was no reneging of any agreement. The GOP was going to fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program, they’re probably going to renew FISA, though that could be in doubt due to the memo exposing some shady activity by the FBI/DOJ being released this week, and there was no way the GOP was going to let the DACA issue fester. Protections were going to be granted. No mass deportations of this group, which number around 800,000, were going to occur. The Senate Republicans had already signaled that something on DACA was going to happen. All of this was agreed to, but the Democrats decided to shut down the government for illegal aliens anyway—and they lost. Yet, overall, given how hostile Navarro has been to the leader of the GOP, it’s a fair question.
