Condi for VP? So Far, Just a Rumor ...

Rumors are swirling that Condi Rice is "campaigning" for the position of Vice President.  As ABCNews’ Mary Bruce Reports:

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is actively courting the vice presidential nomination, Republican strategist Dan Senor said.

“Condi Rice has been actively, actually in recent weeks, campaigning for this,” Senor said this morning on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

According to Senor, Rice has been cozying up to the Republican elite.

“There's this ritual in Washington: The Americans for Tax Reform, which is headed by Grover Norquist, he holds a weekly meeting of conservative leaders -- about 100, 150 people, sort of inside, chattering, class types,” Senor said. “They all typically get briefings from political conservative leaders. Ten days ago, they had an interesting visit -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice -- the first time a secretary of state has visited the Wednesday meeting.”

... The idea that Condi would be campaigning so brazenly for the position doesn't ring true to me.  More likely, she would first offer to "head-up" the search committee for a Veep pick -- and then "pick" herself (joking) ...

In all seriousness, a friend of mine, who was in attendance at the meeting, tells me this was a long-planned meeting that had nothing to do with her ambitions.  In addition, my source tells me  that, in response to a question about the VP position, her body language implied that she did not want the position.  Granted, this is purely anecdotal -- but no more so than the rumors she is campaigning for the position ...

Of course, the truth often doesn't make for as good a story.

Who knows if Condi wants the job, or not, but so far, this story is pure conjecture being promoted by a Republican strategist.  Sadly, it's being treated as the gospel truth ...
