Hope for CA Conservatives?

If you're like most conservatives, you're a bit disappointed in the path Arnold Schwarzenegger has recently chosen to follow. But there may be some very good news on the horizon for California conservatives: Ron Nehring is currently running unopposed to become Chairman of the CA GOP.

If you're not familiar with Ron Nehring, you should be.

I first met Nehring when I was at the Leadership Institute and he was a frequent lecturer for our campaign schools.

Seeing an opportunity to do more, he started a conservative non-profit specifically dedicated to the goal of training "the next generation of California conservatives."

Then, Nehring (who had previously served as Executive Director of the Republican Party of San Diego County) was elected Chairman of the San Diego GOP. His tenure as Chairman has been extraordinary. For example, since 2001, San Diego Republicans claimed an Assembly seat from the Democrats, added City Council Member, and won two mayoral elections. According to Nehring: "... 63% of the elected offices in San Diego County are now held by Republicans."  And because of his success, he was next elected Vice Chair of the CRP.

Nehring's rise has been nothing short of meteoric. No doubt, it's because he combines a solid understanding of conservative philosophy with political -- and organizational -- sagacity.  (He is a proven conservative who has stood up to liberal groups, such as the NEA.)

With a little luck, Nehring may be just what California Republicans have been longing for.
