UPDATE: President Trump has accepted.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has officially invited President Donald Trump to deliver the State of the Union Address on February 4, 2020, two days after the Iowa Caucuses.
"In their great wisdom, our Founders crafted a Constitution based on a system of separation of powers: three co-equal branches acting as checks on each other. To ensure that balance of powers, the Constitution calls for the President to "from time to time give to Congress Information of the State of the Union," Pelosi wrote in a letter Friday afternoon. "In the spirit of respecting our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 in the Chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives."
Pelosi's invitation comes just two days after she resided over impeachment votes in the House. Since both articles against President Trump passed, she's refused to turn them over to the Senate.
The House is currently out of session until January 6 and votes won't continue until January 7. House Democrats left town yesterday and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is already back in New York. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is wrapping up Senate business Friday afternoon.
