Last Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was given the title of “honorary president” in Laredo, Texas, which separates the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mayor Pete Saenz of Laredo awarded the speaker with a key to the city as well as a framed plaque titling her as the honorary president.

“Hey, we have a woman president,” Pelosi said jokingly in response. She said she will display both the key and the framed certificate in her office.

Saenz held a press conference with Pelosi and Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX), which went live on Facebook. During the conference, Pelosi provided comments on her priorities regarding border security. She said she looks to implement better scanning technology for vehicles coming through ports of entry, provide resources for those seeking asylum and increase funding for judges to make it quicker to process people crossing the border.

“What we are talking about here [is] not building a wall,” Pelosi said. “But building a protection again that respects people and values.”

All the while, the speaker continues to claim that America is not facing a national emergency as a result of illegal immigration.

“So we do not see this as a declaration of an emergency,” Pelosi said. “It shouldn’t be, and therefore under the leadership of Congressman Joaquin Castro, on Monday, we will send to the Rules Committee the resolution of disapproval of the President’s actions.”

Pelosi said the House plans to bring a resolution, introduced by Rep. Castro (D-TX) last Thursday, to the Rules Committee today. Both Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that Trump’s national emergency declaration was unconstitutional.
