The GAO's Draconian Spending Recommendations

The GAO's Draconian Spending Recommendations
Remember when Harry Reid called $61 billion in cuts draconian? I wonder how he feels about the recently released GAO report, noting that duplicated programs lead to

billions in waste.

Here are a few highlights from the report:
  • 34 agencies have similar or overlapping objectives
  • 47 areas that could be targeted for reduced operating costs (e.g. targeting "improper federal payments")
  • 44 federal training programs that overlap
  • duplications in programs aimed at boosting ethanol production
These were a few of the hundreds of suggestions made in the report, but even that does not fully address the "full universe of duplication, overlap or fragmentation within the federal government".

The full GAO report can be found here, but it is 345 pages long. Sen. Tom Coburn's office released a summary, which is easier to digest.
