Will Romney Announce His VP This Week?

In light of the great Condi misdirection and new, conflicting reports over whether Mitt Romney has already settled on a running mate, the media's 'Veepstakes' obsession has once again kicked into high gear.  How should the campaign handle the timing?  Who's it going to be?  How will conservatives react?  I chewed these questions over with Fox News' Neil Cavuto last evening:

Cavuto repeatedly asked me to speak on behalf of "the base," which I tried to side-step as adroitly as possible.  I'm generally of the opinion that any of the big names often associated with the short list would be at least serviceable.  Excitement and inspiration would be great, but not necessary; barring an unmitigated meltdown, I don't see Mitt Romney's running mate being a significant determinative factor in November. Am I wrong?
