BREAKING: DREAM Act Dies In Senate; UPDATE: DADT Repeal Passes

The Senate has failed to invoke cloture on the "DREAM" amnesty act, effectively killing the bill.  The vote was 55-41, five votes short of moving forward.  Sen. Joe Lieberman is now introducing a cloture vote on Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal.

Here's the AP write up, which predictably blames Senate Republicans for killing these innocent kids' laudable aspirations.  (Five Democrats also voted to kill the DREAM, and three Republicans voted yes -- Bennett, Murkowski, and Lugar -- which the Associated Press somehow fails to mention).

UPDATE: 63 Senators have voted to invoke cloture on Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal.  This all but guarantees the policy will be removed following the requisite debate.  Only 33 Senators voted to block a stand-alone vote.  Lieberman was right -- in fact, he underestimated the numbers.  Six Republicans (Collins, Snowe, Brown, Kirk, Voinovich, and Murkowski) voted with 57 Democrats (Joe Manchin skipped both tough votes this morning) to move to a final vote, which will occur this afternoon.

UPDATE II: Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal has passed the Senate, 65-31.  Republicans Ensign and Burr switched from no on cloture to yes on final passage.
