The Obama-Reid-Democrat strategy to settle disputes goes something like this:

You crazy Right-Wingers are extremists and have no ability to settle differences and can't do anything right but why don't you just see it our way and we'll shake hands, smile during the photo-op and then stab you in the back. Whaddya say pals?
