Joy Reid Has an Interesting Take on 'Media Spin'

MSNBC anchor Joy-Ann Reid believes the media has a clear target: Republicans.

Her matter-of-fact statement was tweeted after the government shutdown, which most people blamed on the Democrats because of their demands over DACA. Social media knew the real story and was pretty confused by Reid's take.

Newsbusters has the statistics to back up that last tweet. In their yearlong study of how the mainstream media networks covered Trump, the outlet found that 90 percent of the headlines were negative.

Reviewing all of this coverage, our analysts catalogued 5,883 evaluative statements about the President or his administration from either reporters, anchors or non-partisan sources such as experts or voters. Only about 10 percent of those comments (617) were positive, compared with 5,266 (90%) which were negative — an unparalleled level of media hostility for a President in his first year in office.

Those same networks who loved Trump when he generated bad headlines were silent when it came to his accomplishments. Time and again, NBC, CBS and ABC could care less about Trump's job-friendly deregulation, his expansion of religious freedom, and his success in getting conservative justices confirmed.

The three evening newscasts spent just 37 seconds on that last accomplishment, Newsbusters tallied.

Rumors of Russian collusion, meanwhile (which remain without evidence), received 1,234 minutes of broadcast evening news coverage.

Perhaps the imbalanced ratio can explain why only one-third of Americans has a “very favorable” or “somewhat favorable” opinion of the news media.

Another statistic: The government has now reopened and 84 percent of voters thought it was "unnecessary."
