Scalise Calls in to Weekly Whip Meeting During Rehabilitation

As the press descends on White House and Capitol Hill for the nonstop stream of breaking news that is the fate of Jeff Sessions and health care, now's a good time to appreciate a beautiful moment that occurred Monday. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), one of five victims wounded in the shooting at the congressional baseball practice in June, pleasantly surprised his colleagues Tuesday when he called in to the weekly whip meeting.

Scalise was shot in the hip on the baseball field and has undergone multiple surgeries at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. However, he noted that he is currently in the rehabilitation process, and appeared to be in good spirits. He sense of humor was in full force, asking his colleagues whether the Senate had passed its health care bill yet.

Another special moment on Tuesday proved that Congress is able to put humanity before politics. When Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) returned to Washington for the first time since his brain cancer diagnosis, he was welcomed with a standing ovation

It was a partisan vote on health care, yet Democrats made their way over to McCain to give him their well wishes.

Scalise is currently in fair condition and McCain is strong enough to hike with family and friends and give compelling speeches on the Senate floor. We send all our thoughts and prayers their way.
