Before he was elected Mayor, Zohran Mamdani said he wanted to empty prisons because violence is an 'artificial construct.'
"Oftentimes, we've even found as legislators, when we go into these courts, the term 'violent crime' is even used when people are stealing packages. 'Violent crime' is even used when people are accused of burglary, and there happens to be a housing unit in that same dwelling," he said at the time. "So violence is an artificial construction, and we have to be very clear that what is happening here with these district attorneys, that is violence."

It's part of the Democratic Socialist worldview that crime, including violent crime, is a social construct. I have, blessedly, not been the direct victim of a violent crime. But a few months ago, my neighbor alerted me that an unidentified man tried to open the windows of my house, presumably to gain entry. It was terrifying, and I shudder to think what would have happened to me, or my son, had my windows not been locked. Several years ago, while I was away, my apartment was broken into. My laptop, video camera, and car were stolen. I felt deeply violated and never felt safe in that apartment again.
Really? So if someone breaks into and burgles your house, that's not violence? Being pushed onto train tracks isn't violence? Having your goods stolen and your safe space violated isn't violence?
This comes from the same people who say misgendering someone is 'violence.' Who say that denying health insurance claims is 'violence.' Who believe not bending the knee to Black Lives Matter is 'violence.'

Or something like getting evicted from your rental property is 'violence,' as I covered earlier today.

Mamdani himself even gave away the game here, by claiming that district attorneys labeling crimes as 'violent' is an act of violence.
In short: Mamdani does, in fact, believe violence exists, but he wants to fundamentally reimagine what violence is. That means doing away with things that are actual violence—robbery, rape, assault, riots, murder—in favor of a socialist definition of violence that classifies any opposition to the socialist agenda as 'violence.'
That's why Mamdani went to watch the World Cup with inmates at Rikers, including one who strangled his girlfriend to death.

Mamdani doesn't consider that violence. Nor does he consider rape violence, as he laments that broadening the definition of non-consensual sexual contact has thrown a wrench into his 'public safety' lies.
This is the same thing we saw with Angela Davis, as I wrote about here. Davis wanted to abolish prisons for violent criminals and her friends, but was fine with communist dissenters and other political opponents remaining behind bars. She even said they deserved that punishment.
Realize what the game is. The Democratic Socialists have no intention of abolishing prisons. They are going to repurpose prisons for their political opponents. They will not stop calling things violent; they will stop calling actual violence violence and start calling things like evictions, speech that offends them, healthcare claim denials, and other pet causes 'violence.'
So violence will still exist, and it will then be an actual social construct. And it will be used as a permission structure to steal your wealth, your business, and your property and to either throw you into the prisons they don't actually intend to abolish or to line you up against the wall and execute you for the good of the state.
