Former New Mexico Governor and UN Ambassador Bill Richardson is considered to be a strong contender for the slot, although I have not seen any reports that he is pushing for the position. Obama certainly owes Richardson a bigger favor than Kerry. Richardson threw his support behind Obama during the primaries and was publicly called "Judas" by Clinton advisor James Carville.

Kerry may be trying to get ahead of Richardson in line by making his desire to be Secretary of State known this early.
